Agloves – the product that means I no longer text with the tip of my nose.

If you’re a woman with a smartphone, you may know what I’m talking about. Even if you don’t want to admit it to the internet.

I admit I have texted a quick “ok” and even opened my facebook with the tip of my nose on a cold winter day.

What?

It couldn’t be helped. I live in Canada and you can’t use a capacitive touch screen with gloves on. Or, you couldn’t until Agloves. Pictured at right (black is the new black!), Agloves are thin gloves made of silver-coated nylon. (Hence the Ag…bring back memories of high school chemistry?) Touch screens work because tiny amounts of moisture, salts and oils in your skin allow electrons to flow between you and your device. Agloves allow the bioelectricity from your palms to flow through the gloves to your fingertips, maintaining your connection whenever you need it.

Great concept, right? But do they work?

Yep! Almost perfectly. Or maybe perfectly. It’s my fingers that suck. I send the funniest texts, but it’s never on purpose, and I’m glad to say that my typing didn’t get any worse while wearing Agloves.

I love the science; I love the sleek black styling; I love not taking my gloves off in -30 temps to send a text. I love Agloves.

Win it! We’ve got a pair of agloves for one lucky TOP reader. To enter, simply comment on this post before noon mst on Nov. 30, 2011.

bcharmed = utterly charming

Have you heard of bcharmed?

Neither had I!

This brand new company out of Utah has taken the bling world by storm with their handcrafted, totally unique and absolutely affordable jewelery line.

Jacquie Fleming, a stylist with bcharmed, has kindly provided me with my choice of bcharmed necklace to review. You’ll be thrilled to know I chose that one over there on the right, and it’s freaking amazing! It’s called the black pearl flower necklace ($35 – see? Affordable!) and I completely love it.

I have a LOT of bling (yep – a LOT…), and this one is unique. The fact that it’s black means it matches absolutely everything, and the triple strand really stands out but isn’t so big that my under-tall self can’t wear it. The flower is movable – and removable – making it an incredibly versatile piece. It is a simple safety pin on the back so can even be added to a sweater to spread the style around.

For this and other bcharmed bling, you can shop online at Jacquie’s store. There are bracelets, baubles, stamped charms, soldered charms, earrings and more – take a look!

Check out Jacquie’s bcharmed page or email her for more information. If you’re in Southern Alberta, consider hosting a boutique to earn your own free bling. No matter wear you live, you can join Jacquie’s team and make yourself some cold hard cash – and free jewelery too!

Jacquie’s bcharmed is giving away the pictured black pearl flower necklace valued at $35 to one lucky TOP reader. To enter, simply leave a comment on this post before noon mst on November 30, 2011 and we’ll contact the winner to get it shipped for arrival in time for Christmas! Good luck!

CONTEST CLOSED – Congratulations to Janaye!

About one of my FAVOURITE companies. Ever.

Seventh Generation has long been my go-to brand for dishwashing, laundry and home cleaning products, and when I had a child in diapers they were my disposable choice. Since becoming pregnant with my first babe, I have tried to be as “green” as possible in everything I do. There are some things (like two vehicles and paper towel!) that I’m not willing to sacrifice, but buying from a great company like 7th Gen is an easy way to make a big difference. I just can’t see polluting the earth that I am leaving to my babies, their babies and their babies after them.

For more than 20 years, it’s been Seventh Generation’s mission to help us (i.e. normal people on budgets!) protect our world with our naturally safe and effective household cleaning and personal care products. “Seventh Generation is the nation’s leading brand of household and personal care products that help protect human health and the environment. Established in 1988, the Burlington, Vermont based company remains an independent, privately-held company distributing products to natural food stores, supermarkets, mass merchants, and online retailers across the United States and Canada.” The name of the company comes from this statement: “…in our every deliberation, we must consider the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations.” When I buy products with the Seventh Generation name on them, I know I’m doing the right thing – for the earth, for my family, and for the people who come after us wondering what the heck we did to jeopardize this amazing planet we call home.

You can like their facebook page for great tips and information, and join the 7th Gen Nation (it’s free!) for great coupons.

Win it! One lucky TOP reader will win a 100% organic cotton Seventh Gen Eco lunch bag as well as coupons for a FREE package of Seventh Generation Free & Clear Diapers, Free & Clear Baby Wipes and dish washing products. (The same goods that I was sent to try out for this review – most of which I used and loved before!) To enter, I’d love to hear your best tip on how to be more environmentally conscious (but, as always, any comment can enter, and you can also email in your entry to theopinionatedparent at gmail dot com for you non-bloggy folks who always love to enter!) Canadian residents only for this one, please.

Welcome them to motherhood with books!

What better way to encourage literacy amongst the population than welcoming babies into the world and women into motherhood with books.

THE LITTLE BIG BOOK FOR MOMS is a magic wand for new mothers. It instantly provides in one silver gilt-edge book a treasury of fairy tales, nursery rhymes, songs, games, and activities for new moms to do and read with their children. I recalls when my oldest child was a baby asking readers of my personal blog what I could sing to him other than the alphabet. I could have really used this book! I now keep one on a table close to where we read bedtime stories every night and it’s an awesome resource – the perfect book for every mom who doesn’t want her little ones to miss out on the classic tale of Princess and the Pea, or wants to be reminded of the words to Rub-a-Dub-Dub, play I’m a Little Teapot and Itsy, Bitsy Spider, learn how to create shadow puppets and who wants to make recipes that are especially yummy like Frozen Chocolate Bananas. In other words, this is a book for moms who want to be special moms and who want to bring memorable activities to their little ones. And, when everyone has finally gone to sleep at night, there are essays just for Mom by Anne Lamott, Susan Cheever, and Amy Herrick.

THE ULTIMATE ORGANIZER FOR MOMS is a one-stop, indispensable resource to encourage communication between parent and child. It goes from pregnancy through year five, and is a perfect gift for every new mom and mother-to-be. It will make her life easier with great organizational tools & places to record things like her child’s medical records, birthday parties, playmates, teachers, favorite toys, baby sitters, and those all-so-important “firsts” but it will also give her bragging rights to say “Yes! I’ve kept a baby book for my child.” The Ultimate Organizer for Moms comes with a front and a back pocket and is held snugly together by an elastic band.

What a charming gift the combination of these books would make for an expectant or new mother!

Win it! We’re giving away both! To enter, comment before noon mst on May 21, 2010.

Positive Parenting – One Solution Right At Your Fingertips

positiveparentingI am often asked if my young preschooler can read because I’m a teacher, and if my toddler speaks prolifically because my profession is early childhood education. Also, I’m often asked if I think I’m a better parent than people who aren’t teachers.

Um, no. Emphatically no.

My children were born with the gifts they were given and I have had the good fortune to be able to expose them to things and play with them in ways that nourished the growth of those gifts, but am I a better parent? Hardly. It’s a heck of a lot easier with a group of 20 kids that aren’t yours than with one or two that you sprung from your loins. I have the same struggles as every other mother on the planet. I have moments when I’m very proud of my parenting, and moments when I call myself “Yelly Mom” and find myself apologizing and feeling like a big turd.

I was offered a chance to review “The Breakthrough Course” online from Positive Parenting Solutions and decided to give it a shot, though I’ve never much liked any of the other courses I’ve tried. Anything’s worth a shot when it comes to my children.

And this course? I love it.

It is a “One of a kind, Web 2.0 format online parenting course that teaches parents how to correct misbehaviors in children ages 1-17. The misbehaviors addressed include not listening, backtalk, temper tantrums, dawdling, sibling rivalry, power struggles, the terrible two behaviors and much more.”

It teaches parents “WHY children misbehave, how their own personality plays a role in the misbehaviors and how many “intuitive” strategies (such as “time out”) that parents typically use make behaviors worse. Parents…learn over 20 tools to address misbehaviors in the moment and how to correct the behaviors permanently. Parents report how the misbehaviors begin to disappear almost immediately after implementing the first tool in the Tool Box.

The online course can be accessed 24/7 and is delivered via 42 high quality, HD videos broken down into easy to follow and understand sessions supported by a printable guide. Additional information is provided via supplemental readings and easy and fun interactive learning experiences. Parents rave how their lives are changed dramatically because their relationship with their children is improved, their stress is reduced and their relationship with their spouse has improved.”

That’s what Amy McCready, the founder of Positive Parenting Solutions Inc, says about the course, and I can completely authenticate her claims. The videos aren’t too long and Amy is a great teacher – very easy to listen to and not at all pretentious. I captured some of my faves with flashgot (one of my favourite Firefox add ons) so I can watch them again when I need a little parenting kick in the pants. It would never have occurred to me to pay to take an online parenting course when there’s so much out there for free, but this course is worth every penny of the $199 enrollment fee. It’s full of time-tested techniques that go against the grain of some popular “knowledge” (time-out, anyone?) and each video you watch or exercise you do will give you something you can use right away to make your life and your child’s life easier and more positive. There are also interactive learning modules to allow you to practice what you’ve learned, supplemental readings, tons of FAQ’s at your fingertips and free (FREE!) email and phone support from Amy herself. The weekly emails are awesome pearls of wisdom, but more than that they were a great reminder to me to stay on track, watch the next video and be a better mom.

I’m lucky to have children without major behavioural problems (but they’re totally normal – don’t get me wrong) and a great marriage (also totally normal, though) and the Breakthrough Course has made me much more aware of my parenting and co-parenting at all times throughout the day – particularly the times when I used to be “Yelly Mom.” I’m still not perfect, but I’m better thanks to Positive Parenting!

Save 10% on your enrollment with the code opinionated.

The first 20 that enroll using that discount code will be upgraded to lifetime access for free. Just choose one of the four payment/access options other than the “lifetime” option and Amy will upgrade it to lifetime manually.

Win it! We’re giving away 1 free lifetime enrollment in The Breakthrough Course (valued at $225) to one T.O.P. reader. To enter, just leave a comment on this post before noon mst on October 16, 2009.

CONTEST CLOSED & WINNER EMAILED – Congratulations Susan!

It’s Not Really A Secret

shapelysecretsI was recently sent a sample of an exercise program, Shapely Secrets, that claims to provide a full body workout without any running, jumping or harmful impact. “Simply standing still and following the program sculpts the entire body with Motionless Exercise™. The seven minute exercise can be done nearly anywhere, including at work while at your desk, with zero impact. The complete Shapely Secrets program provides visible results in two weeks.”

Sounds like something that would be pretty appealing to any busy mom, so I decided to give it a test run for you. Background: I am a certified personal trainer and fitness instructor who runs for fun, and it sounds kind of bogus to me. My first thoughts before trying it? Anything’s better than nothing, so if this is someone’s draw into the world of exercise then that’s great, and perhaps it would be great for someone who’s on bedrest or wheelchair bound. The founder, “world-renowned fitness expert Greer Childers” (of whom I have never heard even though I’m in the field) is, quite frankly, slightly plastic looking. She’s orange too, which is a little scary. However, given that it has the potential to be a success for bedrest mamas and the older and differently-abled population, I’ll certainly give it a try.

Thought I’d better get that typed out before I try the system. Back in two weeks!

I’m back. Did you miss me?

So, Shapely Secrets uses Diametric Resistance™ techniques to work muscle against muscle. “This means the simple act of tightening and releasing the muscles in your arms, legs, buns and thighs (either while standing up, sitting or lying down) actually gives you a full body workout and, combined with a healthy diet, helps shed inches—without using weights or cumbersome gym equipment.”

This is true – it’s actually known as isometric or static muscle contraction. Imagine trying to lift something really heavy that you can’t budge. Your muscles contract and you’re pulling, but no movement is happening. That’s the type of “exercise” that this system is based on. I say “exercise” in quotes because I don’t want you to think that this is all you need. Isometric contractions do, actually, work to increase strength without bulk but do not burn enough calories to encourage weight loss on their own and do nothing to increase your cardiovascular fitness.

I tried the workout several times so as to be able to give you a (hopefully) objective review. Admittedly, I’m negatively biased against anything that lures people into thinking losing weight is easy, but I’ll do my best to be fair.

The workout is, indeed, seven minutes long. I don’t care who you are – you have seven minutes to dedicate to yourself. For that alone, this program may be great for some busy parent who would otherwise do no exercise at all. Combine it with a fast walk with your children or alone and you’ve got an easy & decent workout.

The program comes with Greer’s “7 Secrets to Being Thin and Shapely” pamphlet as well as a DVD of the program and a cheap little case to keep it all together. The case itself makes me angry. It’s cheap piece of made-in-China crap that they’re selling separately for twenty bucks. You could find a similar one at any dollar store, so don’t fall for it. Take it if you get it free with the program, but don’t pay for it.

The workout is easy, and would be great for someone who has no home equipment or is housebound. New mom, perhaps? However, it’s not something I can recommend you go and buy right now. It’s just a little too “infomercial” for my liking, and we all know how those things tend to work out. (Except the PedEgg – that rocks!) I’m not saying it wouldn’t work for you. I’m just saying it’s not “the” answer. “The” answer isn’t actually a secret. Eat less and exercise more. The program itself is certainly decent if you’re looking for something simple, quick & easy. It’s the fact that they promote a pamphlet and a cheap bag as being something special that ticks me off.

Shapely Secrets is available online for $43. If you want to give it a try, there’s a 30 day satisfaction guarantee. So if it sounds like something you want to try, you’ve really go nothing to lose!

Win it! Shapely Secrets is giving FIVE winners a chance to try out the system. To enter to win, leave a comment on this post before noon mst on Friday, September 25, 2009.

Pregnancy Induced Muffin Top Got You Down?

cinchDitch it – it’s a Cinch!

The Cinch by Anew is a much more beautiful and more cleverly designed tummy wrap like the docs used in the good old days. It comes in two sizes, 26-34” or 33-42”. It uses dual front panels and double side wings for all around cinching, yet is comfortable enough to be work all day or night long. The panels are adjustable so it shrinks as you shrink, and your shrinkage (heh) is easy to see with the inner measuring tape. It looks at first like it would be a little claustrophobic & sweaty but it’s not at all – it’s got a moisture absorbent and breathable inner lining with Anion to promote better circulation.

The Cinch features a front inner pocket feature to fit a warm/cold pack insert, and a side zipper allows for ease of wear. There are some ugly tummy wraps on the market, but that’s not something that’s even on the radar for the Cinch. It’s absolutely gorgeous! Starting at the packaging, no detail was excluded. It comes on a hanger as pictured at right, which is draped in a stylish silver satin bag. When you get it all unwrapped and opened, the Cinch itself is very pretty. It comes in two greys – a light and a dark – and pink and sells for $86 at the Cinch site.

Though I haven’t seen them first hand, Anew appears to have some potentially great clothing too. A shirt that sucks in my stomach for me? I’ll give that a shot!

Win it! A cinch in your choice of size & colour is up for grabs. To enter, choose your specs here and comment before noon mst on September 26, 2009.

CONTEST CLOSED & WINNER EMAILED – Congrats Michelle!

EcoBaby Canada is for EcoMamas Too!

lunapadsTOP fave EcoBaby Canada isn’t just for eco-babies. Canadian mama of four, Andrea, carries a large selection of products for the green-leaning mom as well. Andrea is running for the Savvy Mom Entrepreneur of the Year and I happen to think she totally deserves it!

I’ve been checking out the LunaPads intro kit (Canadian made too!) It’s an introductory kit that allows you to try both pads (for light and average flow) and pantyliners (for daily needs or very light flow). It contains 1 Maxi Pad, 1 Maxi Liner, 1 Maxi Wing Liner, 1 Mini Pad, 1 Mini Liner, 1 Mini Wing Liner, 1 Mini Pantyliner and 1 Teeny Pantyliner in assorted colours. It sells for $57.99 and can save both you and the earth in the long run. Just think of the money you spend on feminine hygiene products between the teen years and menopause, and how much of it ends up in our landfills and sewers. If we get our young women started with eco-friendly products like those available from EcoBaby Canada, so much of that could be prevented.

I’ll admit I was a little leery of using these (and I’m still terrified of the Diva Cup!) but actually they’re pretty darn awesome! They can just go in with the regular laundry (not your cloth diapers – Andera says the flannel can make them pill) and come out just as good as new. If the thought grosses you out, be flexible – a little goes a long way when it comes to being green. Use a LunaPads liner with a regular tampon or Diva Cup, or even just use them on light flow days. Every little bit helps!

We’re giving a Luna Pads intro kit away to one reader (worldwide) courtesy of Eco Baby Canada. To enter, leave a comment on this post before noon mst on August 31, 2009.

CANADIAN residents, get TWO extra entries! Please go VOTE for Andrea in the Savvy Mom Entrepreneur of the Year contest – leave your email address (the one you voted with) in the form with your second comment and you’re entered two more times.

Whee! Wii!

Wii-stuffSince we got our Wii & Wii Fit, we haven’t played them nearly as much as we thought we would. In fact, it just might have an embarrassing layer of dust on it. I blame it on having small children who aren’t allowed to touch expensive electronics. However, we recently received a few cool items to go along with our Wii that have brought it back in to our repertoire.

The NERF Sports Pack ($19.99) includes add-ons for Baseball, Golf, and Tennis that are coated in that great & well loved NERF material that protects both your head and your big screen tv. I love that these games actually came with our Wii so we could play with them right away without buying anything else. All of these games are way more fun when you have the right equipment instead of just a Wii-mote. Who knew? The NERF Racing Wheel (only $9.99) makes driving super fun and much safer. It actually inspired me to let the three year old drive, which means we no longer have to wait until after bedtime to break out the games! I would never have played or bought Mario Kart if I didn’t have to try out this wheel, and now it’s my fave!

Energizer Power & Play Wii 4X Charger ($39.99) offers Wii users the ability to charge up to 4 Wii-motes with or without the wrist-strap via conduction technology. If you have more than two remotes, you MUST get one of these! It’s pretty awesome to know you’ll all be able to play together with fully charged remotes any time. It comes with 4 rechargeable battery packs, 4 battery covers and a power cord. If you’ve only got two remotes, check out the very cool Energizer Power & Play Wii Induction Charger ($49.99). It charges 2 Wii-motes at once without removing the silicone jacket or your Wii Motion Plus attachment and comes with 2 rechargeable battery packs, 2 battery covers and a power cord.

Performance Designed Products (PDP) is an industry leader in designing and manufacturing products for all major video game platforms including the Sony PS2, PS3, PSP, Nintendo Wii, GameCube, Nintendo DS, Microsoft XBOX and XBOX 360. The company has been supplying video game accessories to the U.S. market for more than a decade. PDP sells products under a variety of brands, with sales in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and throughout Europe. For more information on PDP and its products, visit www.pdp.com.

Until Death – or Divorce – Do You Part

Secret recipes cover smallI’ve had this gem sitting in my huge-and-ever-growing pile of review books for a few months and, though it wasn’t at the top yet, the colour caught my eye as I was choosing some new bedtime reading material. I’m glad it did! Secret Recipes for the Modern Wife: All the Dishes You’ll Need to Make from the Day You Say “I Do” Until Death (or Divorce) Do You Part by Nava Atlas is a quick read and it’s just the light & funny thing I needed this week.

With cool retro art and a lot of snark, it contains recipes like “Beans ‘n’ Weenies of Sexual Tension” and “Soufflé of Fallen Expectations” to entertain you. There are chapters full of Recipes for Accommodation, Recipes for Trouble, Recipes for Disaster and Recipes for Reconciliation and Romance. While this book may be funnier if you have a tense marriage or like to laugh at men rather than with them, any woman with a sense of humour would surely enjoy it. It ends a little happier, with A Fairly Satisfactory Family Stew and Happily-Ever-After Ambrosia. Hopefully you’re all leaning more toward the ‘happily ever after.’ At least, that’s our wish for you. That, and a good dose of snark once in a while.

Got Milk? The Very Best Lact-educational Experience on DVD.

simply-breastfeedingContrary to what I heard & read before my first child was born, breastfeeding isn’t always easy. Though I’ve exclusively nursed two children for a looooong time and it certainly got easy and wonderful and even blissful, it didn’t start out that way. Either time.

My memories of learning to nurse my first consist of requiring a nurse, my mom, my husband, a stool and a huge pillow in order to get him properly latched, and heaven forbid the pillow slip or the footstool not be in exactly the right position. The creams, the pain – OhGoodLordInHeaven the pain – it was all normal (for me) but it’s a good thing I was so committed to my children never having formula or I surely would have given up. Once the first 6-8 weeks passed and I was able to nurse him pain-free anywhere & anytime, it was just as amazing as I originally thought it would be from the beginning. Had I had the Simply Breastfeeding DVD with Shari Criso of My Baby Experts prior to giving birth, I would have been much more prepared and well educated.

The “breastfeeding educational program” is incredibly thorough. It runs 2 hours and comes on 2 discs. Part one addresses the benefits of breastfeeding for both you and your baby, and helps you establish a strong personal reason WHY you want to breastfeed, and part two teaches you exactly HOW to breastfeed. It’s organized into helpful chapters so it’s easy to skip to the topic you want or watch it straight through in one sitting.

Some of what you’ll learn from Simply Breastfeeding, as stated on Shari’s website:

* Amazing Benefits For Both You & Your Baby – that You Might Not Have Heard Before
* Exactly How to Hold Your Baby – with real Mom & Baby demonstrations
* How to Prevent the Unneccessary Nipple Pain You Hear About in Other Mom’s Horror Stories
* Exactly How Much Milk Your Baby Needs Each Day During the First Few Weeks, As Well As Signs and Clues for You to Follow to Make Sure Your Baby is Getting Enough Milk
* How and When to Give Your Baby a Bottle
* How to Avoid the Biggest Mistake that Most Parents Make in the Hospital….

Whether you have a lactation consultant available to you or not, and whether you take a breastfeeding class or not (and no, the half hour devoted to it in prenatal class doesn’t count), this DVD will be invaluable to you in your quest to breatfeed your child. I’ve pretty much been nursing for three years straight, and even I learned some new things about those little newbies that make me feel like I’m in labour all over again.

The My Baby Experts blog has lots of great information for all parents – lactating or not.

Buy it from Amazon or the My Baby Experts site for $40.

Win it! We’re giving away a copy of this awesomely awesome DVD set. To enter, leave a comment before noon mst on May 22, 2009.

Above and Beyond the 3 R’s

periwinkleWith Earth Day having just passed, there’s no better time than now to introduce you to the Etsy shop of Ruth Smith, a Winnipeg-based Canadian working mom of two, PeriwinkleDzyns. Ruth got tired of seeing all the obsolete electronic components go into the garbage at a local factory and was industrious enough to rescue them, combine them with her jewellery making skills and create her line of upcycled e-waste jewelery.

Her custom original geekery lanyard is the coolest geekiest. It’s 44″ total length (adjustable to your specification) and has a sterling plated chain around the back of the neck for comfort. It’s very sturdily made of new resistors (never in contact with solder or circuit boards) that have been rescued from going to the landfill. It comes equipped with a 0.75″ key ring for your keys, pass card or whatever you need to have within reach. She makes some cool jewelery that’s less function and more fashion as well. I love this one and this one.

Another cool find in Ruth’s shop are the vintage pinback 1.25″ buttons made by her daughter Kendra. She uses words from vintage dictionaries and thesauri to create these cute accessories which she sells for just $2 each, keeping the books out of the recycle bin, increasing her vocabulary and learning basic business skills all at the same time. What a great venture for an obviously smart little girl!

We love a find that allows you to have it all – shop online, support a mom, support a kid and protect the earth.

Win it! We’ve got BOTH of the pictured items up for grabs – a yellow geekery lanyard and a full set of Charlie Brown dictionary buttons. To enter, visit the PeriwinkleDzyns shop and come back to comment with your fave(s) that were not mentioned in this review. Contest closes at noon mst on May 1, 2009.

Belly Bandit – Someone ran away with my baby belly!

If you’ve had a baby, you’ve experienced the post-birth look my friend likes to call the Grimace. It feels gross and it looks gross. Of course, it’s all worth it, but it never hurts to try a little something – anything, really – that is purported to make you both feel and look better. Belly wrapping has been around for centuries, practiced by many cultures around the world. Belly Bandit™ has put a modern spin to it by creating a soft, seamless and tagless wrap that helps new mamas by shrinking the uterus, reduce bloating caused by water retention and providing the back support and confidence you need to walk upright like the human you used to feel like.

I had my baby a couple of weeks before my Belly Bandit arrived in the mail but have been wearing it since I got it and it certainly seems to be helping. Not only does it make me feel better and more secure with walking post-cesarean but my tummy seems a little tighter each day than it did at the same time with my previous births. It also helps me feel more confident and to remember to sit upright when I’m nursing or rocking my little one.

The compression wrap can be used a day after delivery to help reduce swelling of the uterus and bloating from water retention. The stretchy Velcro bound wrap is available in three different styles, Original ($40), Couture ($50), and Bamboo ($60) and can be worn for six to eight weeks post-birth. Buy it online. – by Shannon

Win it! We’re giving away a Belly Bandit! To enter, go choose your favourite Belly Bandit style and leave a comment here letting us know which one you’d like to have. Once the draw is complete, you’ll be able to send an exact measurement to ensure it fits. Contest closes at noon mst on January 29, 2009.

Belli Body Care – Safe Pampering for Everyone

We all know that babies need to be pampered – both in skin and in spirit. We mamas, though, are often a little neglected in the self-care arena and there’s no time we need it more than when we’re raising young children.

However, with the heightened concern about chemicals in body care products it can be tough to find pampering items that are sure to be safe. It’s hard to relax when you could be giving your child cancer or changing the structure of your own ovarian cells.

(I happen to know there are still a lot of people out there who think that products such as those that rhyme with Dohnson and Gahveeno are safe. No, my friends. Throw them away.)

The Belli Baby collection is the only brand in the world that teratology screens every product, ensuring that none of their products contain ingredients linked to birth defects. Even organic brands contain ingredients like aloe vera, which is a teratogen and should be avoided during pregnancy. Belli is the only baby collection free of ALL xenoestrogens (ingredients that mimic estrogen and can cause problems with reproductive development) and not just the highly publicized phthalates. The Belli Motherhood collection is LACTMED screened to ensure safety for nursing moms and their babies. Due to their unprecedented safety standards, they are the #1 OB/Gyn recommended brand in the US and Australia.

Now that I’ve found some strong reassurance in Belli Skin Care, I’m happy to report that both my children and myself are getting some much needed safe pampering. My baby girl is tickled pink with her massages using her Nourish Me enriched body lotion ($19). It’s lightly chamomile scented and, after the initial ticklish giggling subsides, is wonderfully relaxing.

Every new mom needs to check out the Belli eye brightening cream ($37). Even if it’s psychological (which I’m fairly confident it’s not) I love the way my eyes look when I remember to use this on a regular basis. The dark circle, while still puffy with lack of rest, are noticeably lighter and I’d swear the fine lines are less visible.

During & after pregnancy, we could all use the Stretch Mark Minimizing Cream ($52). This healing skin repair treatment is specifically formulated to decrease the appearance of existing stretchmarks. Applied to stretchmarks morning and night for 4 weeks postpartum and then once daily until desired results are achieved, it has been clinically shown to reduce stretchmark length and irregular surface area by up to 52% and stretchmark depth by up to 72%.

Holiday Special & Giveaway From How Fast They Grow

Earlier this year, we reviewed an awesome online scrapping site called How Fast They Grow.

We loved the site then and we love it more now.

Let me refresh your memory…

How Fast They Grow is a mom-owned full service digital scrapbooking site. With their patent-pending Digi-scrapbook program, you can scrapbook if you can upload photos, drag & drop, choose colours and type. There is seriously nothing to it, and the final product is amazing! There are a ton of templates to choose from and more are being added all the time.

Founder Cathy Bennett recently informed me that they’ve dropped their price from $7.50 per page to $5.50 per page – a permanent reduction of over 25%. That? Is awesome.

Until December 28, 2008 you can save an additional 15% with the code TOP15. With the new prices, this means the page price is just $4.67…a super great deal.

Unfortunately they still don’t ship to Canada, but plan to add it in 2009.

Win it! We’re giving away a $50 Gift Certificate to How Fast They Grow. To enter, browse the templates and leave a comment on this post letting us know some of your faves that you might try if you win…or even if you don’t! Contest is open until noon mst on Christmas day.

Public Service Announcement – Preventing Gouged Eyes for Nursing Mothers Everywhere

I’m a very proud breastfeeding mother. I feed my kids anywhere, any time they’re hungry. Both of them have had the awesome habit of stroking my neck or chest while they’re nursing and it’s fabulous, but it’s not so fabulous when they get a little older and it becomes hair pulling, eye gouging and nose picking. I wish I’d discovered the Etsy shop Risky Beads a few years ago. The Risky Beads nurse purse is the perfect solution for preventing non-breast nursing injuries. (Sorry, they won’t stop the nipples as a teething toy thing.)

I have the Pomegranate Nurse Purse (pictured) and both my daughter and I love it. It’s a stunning 33 mm red carnelian gogo donut strung on dark brown waxed cotton cord. It’s the ‘downscaled for the purse’ version of the linked image, which is an agate gogo donut strung on red and gold organza ribbon and dark brown leather cord and accented with a tiger iron rondelle. Extender chains are available if you like your necklaces extra long.

My little Bella loves holding onto and staring at the pendant while she nurses, and it prevents her from pulling my hair the majority of the time. The Risky Beads stones are cold and smooth to the touch and have a hole in the middle that makes it easy for babies to hold onto.

The nurse purse sells for only $12 (I know! Crazy!) and makes a great baby shower gift for the new mama. I love having mine with me everywhere I go – it especially distracts my daughter from pulling my clothing off while she’s nursing on the bench at the mall. Necklaces are also available sans the purse & fancied up for under $25 in the regular necklace section.

With your purchase, you’ll get promotional offers from several other Etsy sellers. You know what’s risky? Not having a nurse purse handy when your baby is hungry. Buy one – your eyeballs and hair follicles will thank you.

Win it! Your choice of nurse purse is up for grabs! Head over to this link to choose the one you want most, and come back to comment with your choice. Contest closes at noon mst on Friday, December 12, 2008.

Goodbye Baggies, Hello Earth Friendly Wraps

Some of our long time readers may remember my review of the Wrap N Mat from February 2007. With the shift toward green living becoming larger (yay!) every day, it’s time to revisit this great invention which is now available from the new-ish Vancouver-based Canadian boutique Lavish and Lime.

Lavish and Lime carries only the Wrap-N-Mats with the phthalate-free LDPE lining (the same material as plastic sandwich bags but a thicker grade to ensure re-usability) and carries a selection of the nicest available fabrics. I’m especially digging the dots fabric (pictured at right) for it’s decidedly not bright and ugly style. These fabulously green reusable sandwich wraps are not only great for sandwiches but also for muffins, crackers and other snacks. When opened they provide a clean place to eat that can be brought home, washed in warm water and re-used for an entire school year. At a price of $7.50, you’ll not only be doing your part to save the earth but you may even be saving money if you’re not buying as many costly ziploc bags.

Save 10% at Lavish and Lime with the code TOP

Win it! We’ve got a reusable sandwich wrap from Lavish and Lime in the rainbow fish print to give away. To enter, leave a comment on this post before midnight mst on October 14, 2008.

Stop Squirming – It’s Called ‘Men-stray-shun.”

As comfortable as I am talking about my own bodily functions since having children, I’m hoping that carries over to a constant conversation about my childrens’ bodies with them. However, I know that lots of parents are uncomfortable starting that conversation with their kids – particularly their daughters – if it hasn’t been a normal topic around the table. From breast buds & hair in strange places to mood swings and first periods, the changes that are brought about by puberty are vast.

No matter how comfortable or uncomfortable you are with talking about it, you and your daughter are sure to appreciate My First Period Kit & DVD from Healthy Chats. While no DVD should be your child’s sole education on the subject, this kit is a perfect starting point. She (and you) will hear the deets from an expert instead of the kids on the playground and you’ll have a mutual knowledge base when you talk about what’s happening with her on any particular day. Based on 15 years of Dr. Chrystal de Freitas presenting mother-daughter seminars & designed for mothers and daughters to watch together, the DVD breaks the ice in a close to perfect way for conversations about anatomy, hygiene, periods & the use of the accompanying paraphernalia, emotional changes, conception & birth, values & principles and more.

The package includes the 99 minute DVD, a full colour parent guide and quick reference card, a bracelet and a “pad purse,” plus a 1-year Healthy Chats online/interactive subscription with newsletters & email access to Dr. de Freitas.

Win it! We’re giving away a My First Period Kit & DVD valued at $20 to one randomly selected T.O.P. reader. To enter, simply leave a comment on this post before September 15/08 @ midnight MST.

Some Extra Healing for The C-Mamas Among Us

As a two time unplanned cesarean mama, I’m the queen of numb belly skin & scar tissue – the mark of a C-Mama. I know – you’re jealous of my hottness.

One of our favourite Canadian online shops, Ecobaby Canada, has post-surgical mamas like me in mind with their C-Mama Healing Salve from Earth Mama Angel Baby. The clinically tested healing salve was created with 100% natural ingredients rich in Vitamin C, essential fatty acids and amino acids — all nutrients necessary for proper cell regeneration and wound repair. Formulated especially for cesarean section and other surgical wounds, old c-section scars and stretch marks, and inflamed rashes and burns, the C-Mama Healing Salve is toxin-free, cruelty-free & certified vegan.

I’ve been using this salve on my well-worth-it-war-wounds and it’s absolutely lovely. It keeps the scar soft & supple and if I could see past the flab I’m sure I’d see it looking better too.

Ecobaby Canada was also featured on T.O.P. here and here.

Win it! EcoBaby Canada is giving one randomly selected T.O.P. reader their own C-Mama Healing Salve valued at $44.99! To enter, leave a comment on this post with your favourite product(s) available from EcoBaby that are not mentioned in this post. Contest closes on September 2, 2008.

Canadian residents can receive an additional entry for this giveaway by voting for Andrea in the SavvyMom Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Go vote (you’ll need to confirm your Canadian citizenship) and leave an extra comment letting us know you did.

Ju Ju Be – Because A Mama Should Never Have to Choose Between Fashion & Function

We don’t often write about diaper bags here. It has to be a pretty darn special bag before we’ll consider recommending it, and it has to be worth any extra money you pay over what you can pick up at the local department store. Ladies, pull out those credit cards because the bags from Ju Ju Be are fan-freaking-tastic! Boutique level fashion with function you didn’t even know you needed. Now that’s what a mama is talkin’ about!

There are a ton of great bags & accessories to choose from at Ju Ju Be, and the available colours are so stunning that I could spend hours just browsing. It’s so hard to choose, but having seen the citrus & green print in person I can tell you without a doubt that if you’re a lover of the vibrant colours that are hip right now you should just go for it.

My favourite bag of all is the largest bag they make. The WannaBe ($160 – pictured bottom right) is absolutely huge. You’ll never want for a pocket or a place for anything when you’re carrying the WannaBe. It features removable backpack straps (two hands to wrangle children!) and shoulder straps, too. The top closes with a strap that’s easily tucked away. The bottom is seriously ingenious. The entire thing zips open to release beach sand through the mesh that hold all of your stuff in place. The pockets on all of the Ju Ju Be Bags are incredibly smart and this is no exception. There’s a cooler pocket with insulation and a wipe clean lining, and electronics pocket with dividers and cushioning to keep your iPods, phones & other goodies from bumping each other or anything else that could scratch them, a magazine pocket, a book pocket, bottle holders and tons of organization for toys, clothes, diapers, beach stuff…whatever! There are two elasticized straps on the outside to hold a towel, leaving a metric tonne of room on the inside for the crap that’s sure to accompany you on a long trip or a day at the beach. Look inside the WannaBe here.

Our next feature is at the opposite end of the spectrum in size but right up there in quality. The BeLight, ($35, pictured top right) the lightest diaper bag on the market at just over 6 oz., is completely reversible and has ingenious straight straps that you can tie any way you choose. Look inside the BeLight here.

Smart features are standard on all of their bags. They’re all machine wash air dry and the outer fabrics are waterproof & treated with Teflon to repel stains. The gorgeous satin linings are waterproof too, and are also anti-microbial. Not only are the linings beautiful but they’re all light coloured which makes it way easier to find your things than the black pit that most bags turn in to. There’s no velcro to snag on things – they use smart magnets in those places instead, and all of the bags feature metal hardware, because plastic just sucks.

You can purchase Ju Ju Be bags at retailers and e-tailers all over the world.

Or, you can try to…

Win it! We’re giving away BOTH of the bags pictured above to two separate randomly selected winners.

To enter, leave a comment on this post before August 26/08 stating either WannaBe or BeLight on the first line so that we know which draw to enter you in.

After that, please tell us your favourite Ju Ju Be item(s) & colours NOT featured in this review. To enter to win both bags, you must leave a comment for each one.

Additional entries available. See contest entry information and rules.

The Cure For Placenta Brain?

Everyone I know who’s ever been pregnant has experienced preggo-brain to some extent. Sadly, it only gets worse once the kid is out. My brain hasn’t been the same since conception, quite frankly.

As with any other part of our bodies, our brains need exercise. The sudoku craze has to be doing something great for our species, but what do you do if you aren’t a fan? Or can’t figure the damn things out?

Check out Brainiversity. It’s one of the best brain training games I’ve tried to date. Edison the talking light bulb accompanies you as you play, and he can be muted at any time (which can be a very good thing). There are a huge variety of games to play and more are unlocked as you progress. If you play daily, you’ll take a quiz each day composed of 4 tests which is recorded on your personal graph.

Many games in this genre are ridiculously easy for the intelligent among us (ahem) but this one is neither simple nor repetitive. It’s incredibly enjoyable, actually. It would be too easy for advanced brain trainers, but for kids, the average adult (particularly those with kids) or seniors, Brainiversity is fabulous! We talk a lot about baby shower gifts here, but I think this would make an awesome retirement gift.

Buy it for less than $20 at Amazon.

Win it! We’ve got a copy of Brainiversity to give away. To enter, leave a comment on this post by 11:59 mst tonight – August 7/08.

Additional entries available – up to four per person. See contest entry information and rules.

Once You Pop, You Just Can’t Stop

We’re back from our Heritage Day long weekend. Our apologies to our American and overseas friends who were looking for us yesterday. It was a long weekend here and we didn’t think to check if everyone else had one too.

The Opinionated Parents have been trying out Pop’rs, the newest way to get your kids to eat…anything!

Pop’rs come in one ounce shaker jars and are available in eight flavours and are incredibly versatile in their uses. Imagine the Pop Rocks of your youth with a variety of flavours and vitamins added. Some need to be added to food to taste good. Others, like the red Color Burst, taste exactly like Pop Rocks and if you’re anything like me your kids won’t get any and your tongue will be blue for a few hours. (Yes blue. I was confused too…)

Check out their blog for more information, and read on for our writers’ opinions and a reader
giveaway.

With seven children I have faced more picky eaters than I would have ever liked to have seen. Normally, if you can just get them to TASTE the food you know they will like it, but getting that bite into their little clamped-shut mouths is nearly impossible. Until now!

Pop’rs are just the trick to get those mouths pried open and show those little ones that food DOES taste good. Pop’rs are like the candy Pop Rocks, they explode on your tongue. With 8 choices to choose from, any food can become a tasty, fun treat for your child. I was so happy to see great flavors for the adult child, too, such as Buffalo flavoring, which is amazing on pork.
Butter flavoring on veggies and potatoes may not seem exciting, but when the kids start hearing the crackling they just have to give it a taste, and their mouths a treat.
Across the board, my entire family enjoyed Pop’rs on nearly everything. Potatoes, meat, oatmeal, ice cream, vegetables; you name it, we sprinkled it! – Lisa

Want a better way to jazz up vegetables than smothering them with cheese sauce? Would you like your kids to devour yogurt without it having to be in a squeezable tube or frozen on a stick? Would it be nice to make less-sugary and more-economical tub oatmeal just as jazzy as the individual packs? Enter: Pop’rs. Pop’rs is like nothing you’ve ever seen or heard of before — I guarantee it. It’s probably something you’ve never even dreamed about.

What are Pop’rs? Imagine Pop Rocks as a food topping. They’re not candy, though….they’re better than candy. They even have vitamins in them! Imagine carbonated, fizzy vitamin granules in a variety of flavors that your kids will love sprinkling on everything.

They currently manufacture eight flavors: Strawberry, Color Burst, Butter, Cocoa, Taco, Cinnamon, Buffalo, and Raspberry. We tried the Buffalo Pop’rs on our broccoli and chicken. Very authentic buffalo flavor, and an amazing, fizzy kick, for sure! Kids will delight in the fact that sizzling noises erupt from their plates before them, as well as within their mouths as they gobble up their meal!

There are a wealth of other ideas for Pop’rs: Butter Pop’rs over popcorn, Strawberry Pop’rs over cereal, even Cinnamon Pop’rs over stewed apples. The possibilities are endless!

-Meg

I confess, when I was first asked to review Pop’rs®, I was confused. What is it exactly? Flavored sprinkles? How can sprinkles help encourage healthy eating? After trying all eight flavors, though, I’m a believer. Pop’rs sounded like Rice Krispies when added to milk and every flavor tastes like the old pop candy you remember from years ago.

Rachael Ray is also a fan. In her May 2008 magazine, she said Pop’rs “…add pop to anything! We like the cinnamon on buttered toast. FIZZ FACTOR: full fireworks …”

Pop’rs are available in EIGHT FLAVORS: strawberry, raspberry, color burst, cinnamon, cocoa, taco, buffalo and butter.

–Sprinkle Color Burst on any flavor of yogurt (and sprinkled on vanilla ice cream, it turns plain vanilla into something a lot like cotton candy)

Chocolate’s a super flavor on top of pudding (my husband tried it on milk and we both laughed at how much it sounded like “Snap, Crackle and Pop!”)

–Introduce Strawberry to your kiddos’ cereal in the morning.

Raspberry is a treat with yogurt & ice cream.

–Corn & other veggies take well to Butter (so does popcorn! Yum!)

Taco can’t be beat on mashed potatoes.

Buffalo (as in the seasoning used on wings) goes hand-in-hand with broccoli & its kindred spirits.

Like what you hear? Go here to purchase Pop’rs at some VERY reasonable prices and get to popping! -CPA Mom

Win it! We’re giving away a a complete box of Pop’rs – all eight flavors valued at $14.99 – to one lucky TOP reader! To enter, simply leave a comment on this post before 11:59 mst on August 12, 2008.

Additional entries available – up to four per person. See contest entry information and rules.

On a butt that soft, only the best will do.

I have admitted here many times that I’m a snob. A blanket snob, a toy snob, a clothing snob…and yes, a butt cream snob. If it’s toxic, it’s sure as heck not getting rubbed on the nether regions my babies. I’ve tried many creams over the past few years (organic, natch) and they’ve all been satisfactory enough, but the Bottom Balm from Lalabee Baby Bathworks surpasses even my expectations. It clears up diaper rash in a flash (seriously, I’m talking an hour) and there’s nothing in it to irritate baby’s tender skin. Applying it feels like a strange cross between unsalted butter (but not greasy…is that possible?) and really thick olive oil. There’s no resistance and it makes my baby smile even when her little butt is at it’s most tender.

The entire Lalabee line is handcrafted in small batches using certified organic and natural ingredients in beautiful Kelowna, BC by mom Sara Johnson. There are no chemicals, preservatives or dyes in any of the Lalabee products and they use only edible ingredients purchased from local suppliers where possible.

All of the Lalabee containers are reusable or recyclable and the tins are food grade – no plastic to be found. Check out the rest of the baby line and the mama line too.

A portion of sales is donated to buy Heifer International Honeybees. Canadian, mom-run, organic, green, and helping the less fortunate? You’ve gotta love that.

Win it! We’ve got a tin of the fabulous bottom balm for one lucky reader! To enter, leave a comment on this post before 11:59 pm mst on August 7/08.

Additional entries available – up to four per person. See contest entry information and rules.

May The Force Be With You

www.playjishaku.comNot only did I lose all of my contacts and files, but I haven’t even been able to use the 15 minutes per day that my kids are both asleep to attempt to recover them because I’m totally addicted to Jishaku.

What’s that, you ask?

Don’t worry. So did I.

Jishak, the Japanese word for magnet, is a portable strategy game like chess or checkers that can be played anywhere. Unlike any other game, though, there is an element of surprise when the magnets jump out of position without warning.

All magnets have North and South poles. Jishaku magnets do too, but they aren’t marked. As you carefully place your magnet in a hole you can feel the tug of magnets all around the board. Skilled players (apparently…I’m not there yet) learn to use magnetic force in their favor- repelling the magnets closest to them without forcing them into other magnets.

Depending on which version of the game you choose to play, I’m Out, Roundup, or Elimination, your goal will vary. The suspense that you feel as you place your stones, though, never changes. Even when you play it all by yourself as I’ve been doing.

See it in action here and then tell me you don’t want to buy this game. Trust me. You do.

Save 10% through 7/31 with the code TOP100.

Win it!We’ve got a game of Jishaku for one randomly selected winner. To enter, simply comment on this post before 11:59 MST on August 4/08.

Saving Nipples Everywhere…Safely

When I was learning to breastfeed my first baby, I wasn’t all that shocked (well, maybe that’s a lie) at the cracking, scabbing and as-bad-as-labour searing pain that came with it for the first few weeks. I was, however, shocked that as an experienced exclusive breastfeeder the same thing happened when I began to nurse my second child. Granted, it didn’t last quite as long and it wasn’t quite as bad but holy bajeebus did it ever hurt. Without a lot of air drying, a little relief-pumping and some great natural products, there would have been a lot more screaming heard from my house.

bella b nipple cream and nipple cleansing padsYou likely remember the recent headline news about the nipple cream for nursing moms that contained potentially harmful ingredients (chlorphenesin and phenoxyethanol) that could cause respiratory distress or vomiting and diarrhea in infants. This product was taken off the market, thank goodness, and we’ve got a great alternative for you.

Nipple Nurture Butter and Nipple Nurture Cleansing Pads from Bella B Natural Bodycare are 100% edible and are perfectly safe for newborns and moms.

Nipple Nurture Butter ($9.99 for 2 oz.) is a great lanolin-free alternative to other breastfeeding creams. Many people are unaware that lanolin comes from sheep’s wool. Nipple Nurture Butter is an excellent alternative for those that prefer a plant-based product. It contains only the very best natural ingredients including cocoa, shea and mango butter. All of the ingredients are food-grade and free of parabens (which, in case you didn’t know, are controversial but widely used artificial preservatives that are rapidly absorbed, have estrogenic activity and have been found in breast tumours).

Nipple Nurture Cleansing Pads ($9.99 for 80 pads) are a clean, natural solution to cleaning nipples before and after breastfeeding (which I had never done prior to discovering these pads and still don’t do reguarly, but it’s lovely and would be especially awesome in times of thrush.) They not only clean tender nipples but provide excellent soothing and healing properties. Fortified with aloe vera, the cleaning solution is healing and refreshing to sore, cracked nipples.

Win it! One randomly selected winner will win one of each of these great products, together valued at $19.98. To enter, simply leave a comment on this post before noon MST on July 25/08.

Additional entries available – up to four per person. See contest entry information and rules.
