Pretty Pods

The Essentials Travel Pod Set by JJ Cole is one of those baby gear items that you can walk by in the store and think “I don’t really need that.” Yet, as soon as you’ve got it you begin to say “How did I ever live without this?” It’s all about convenience. And hygiene, but maybe that’s just me.

The Travel Pod Set comes with a bottle pod, a diapers & wipes pod(with change pad) and a pacifier pod in coordinating colours. Each one is made of wipe n’ go fabrics and they’re also machine washable – a must for any baby item. Don’t use bottles? Me neither. The bottle pod fits an adult water bottle perfectly, or a sippy cup of the tall n’ slim variety. The pacifier pod is great for keeping the paci handy and clean, but if your kid is like mine and opposed to sucking on anything not made of mommy’s warm skin, it also fits…an iPod! Perhaps my favourite feature, which is on all three pods, is the “attach anywhere” handles. Just need a paci? Hang it from your purse. Going on a walk? Hang the pods you need from the stroller. Convenient. Cute. And did I mention convenient?

The pods are also available separately (but you should really buy the set to save money for the latte you so desperately need), and come in six mod colours.

Just like the box being more fun than the shoes…

The tag is always more fun than the toy. We have tags hanging from everything because we learned very early on never to cut them off. From balls to blankets; stuffed animals to clothing, the tag never fails to entertain. From only a few weeks old children are fascinated by tags, sometimes to the exclusion of the toy the tag is attached to.

Par.entrepreneurs Julie and Danielle noticed the ‘tag phenomenon’ early in their parenting careers and decided to go into business together when the other moms in their playgroup went crazy for their idea. Starting with their ingenious blankets adorned with tags on all four sides, and expanding to include bedding, books, apparel and more, Taggies has been a success from the start.

Perhaps the most unique thing about authentic Taggies items is that every tag looks or feels different. No two tags are alike. They have attractive patterns and intriguing textures, all sewn securely into the snuggly blankie that your baby is sure to love.

Check out the Taggies Random Acts of Kindness program. If you purchase one item from their donation page for charity (from $7 – $80), they’ll match it and two items will be donated to one of the many affiliated facilities or programs.

TAGGIES is offering TOP readers free personalization on your purchase!
Enter promotional code N6B7R9G5Q9 at checkout. Limit one per customer. Offer ends May 1, 2007.

Cushy Padding for Cute Tushies

TushyGear, created by mother of two and par.entrepreneur Emily Sandberg, adds elegance to the public diaper change. Who’d have thought it possible?

Created from funky fabrics on the outside and plush padded terry on the inside, TushyGear are a convenient alternative to the bulky diaper bag. There’s a zippered pocket at one end that’s large enough to hold a few diapers, a wipes case and some sani-gel. They look rather like a luxurious travel pillow when rolled up and fastened with their satin ribbon.

Cute enough to carry alone, small enough to fit in a diaper bag or purse and convenient enough to leave one in each vehicle in case of emergency. How will you use your TushyGear?

Want to enter to win a Tushygear? Email theopinionatedparent[at] gmail[dot]com with TushyGear in the subject line and correctly answer the question Where does TushyGear designer Emily Sandberg live? Hint: check the press page. Contest closes at midnight MST on 3/19/07. Congrats to Jackie C.!

Cozy Toesies

Long gone are the days when we needed to bundle our babies up in bulky blankets to keep them cozy in their strollers and carseats. No more blankets falling onto the filthy floor (a personal pet peeve) or being blown off in the wind. The BundleMe Urban by JJ Cole USA is the perfect solution on those blustery days.

It fits easily into carseats and strollers (from umbrella to luxury to joggers) and has a fully zipper removable top for easy temperature control. The outer quilted fabric (available in four equally gorgeous colours, though I’m partial to ‘stealth’) is water and wind resistant and is machine washable. We threw ours in with the baby laundry and into the dryer and it came out just like new. The inside is a luxurious warm microsuede ~ soft and gentle on baby’s skin. The multitude of strap holes allow it to adjust to almost any seat or stroller system with the straps resting safely right on baby.

Safety is a prime concern when using any fabric, even a thick jacket, between a child and their carseat. We resisted using anything like the BundleMe at first because we were strongly warned against them in the thorough carseat safety course we took before the arrival of our first baby due to the loft being compressed in a crash. The BundleMe Urban (and the entire BundleMe series, for that matter) has been crash tested for safety. The fabric that rests under your child is thinner than most winter coats and will not interfere with the safety of a carseat in a crash. Nice!

The BundleMe Urban is available in two sizes – birth to 1 and 1-3 years. After that, good luck strapping your big little person into a stroller!

Check the JJ Cole USA store locator to find retailers in Canada, the US and online in both countries.

Spacebabies Bed Blocks

Being Canadian, it’s sometimes difficult and prohibitively expensive to purchase many of the great baby goodies available online. Zoom Distribution is a new TOP find that makes it not only possible, but easy. They bring bulk shipments of some of the coolest children’s products on the market into Canada and distribute them to retailers across the country. Keep and eye out for TOP reviews of more cool Zoom products.

Spacebabies Bed Blocks, available in Canada from Zoom’s retailers, were originally invented by brilliant Swedish mother Margareta Persson to help her “ear baby” sleep.

They come in a set of six interlocking “blocks” which safely and securely lift the head of your baby’s crib or toddler’s bed up to 10 cm allowing them (and you!) to get some much needed sleep when they’re suffering from congestion, ear infection or gastric reflux. They fit most legs up to 7 cm diameter. Boy, do I ever wish I had these when our son had his first cold and we were struggling to find books of the same size at 2 am to elevate his mattress.

I’m not sure if cribs in Sweden are on wheels like most of ours are (the picture at left makes me think not), but I found the Spacebabies blocks to be quite secure, even on wheels, as long as the crib is not shaken. However, with a toddler standing and rocking the crib, the legs did topple off the blocks. I suppose you could remove the wheels, but instead we placed the blocks under the mattress on top of the mattress support. One or two blocks in increments under the head of the worked wonderfully, even for my rambunctious little guy. They were very stable and left no holes around the mattress and there was no sagging – we had one in each top corner and one in the centre. Whether used under the legs with newborns or under the mattress with older crib sleepers, Spacebabies Bed Blocks are a much safer alternative to pillows, crib wedges, books and other “MacGyvered” solutions many of us have tried.

At TOP, we’re all over multipurpose items. When the blocks aren’t being used to elevate the crib, they’re great for stacking (or banging, at our house), playdough, bath toys, sand toys and hidden cup games.

A very cool product, and another great shower gift idea. But be careful…you may get a midnight phone call with a tearful thanks when the new parents realize they actually get to sleep when their baby isn’t well.

One lucky TOP reader will win their own set of Spacebabies Bed Blocks, courtesy of Zoom Distribution. Email theopinionatedparent[at]gmail[dot]com with Spacebabies in the subject header and the answer to the question What other Zoom product would you like to see reviewed at TOP? before midnight MST on 3/19/07. Congrats Jaime R!

When Convenience & Style Meet

Following the birth of her son in 2005, par.entrepreneur Cynthia Poblete was looking for the convenience of a diaper and wipes tote in a stylish carrying case. When she didn’t find exactly what she was looking for, she took to the drawing board herself and created The Diaper Clutch with the goal of helping parents everywhere enjoy the convenience of a diaper and wipes carrying case without having to sacrifice style!

The Diaper Clutch is rather unique in the crowded world of diapering accessories. At first glance, it’s simply an attractive little clutch purse. Open it up and you’ll find an ingenious window to access the wipes and a pocket to hold a few diapers, a change pad and a little bottle of hand sanitizer. Perfect to tuck into your diaper bag to keep everything together, or to grab on it’s own for a quick trip. Nobody has to know it contains poo paraphernalia.

Sweetroll Swaddler

Our son was swaddled to sleep for longer than many babies. As a sling worn baby, he was comforted by closeness, but sometimes it was necessary to put him down. For bedtime, there are some wonderful blankets on the market. For daytime, however, you’ve got to have a little style.

The mom-designed Sweetroll Swaddler from Suzy Creamcheese is the answer. In contrast to bulky blankets, the Sweetroll Swaddler makes travel easy. No more frustration of having to unwrap your baby (and wake him up) to place him in the carseat or stroller ~ the open legs allow you to easily move your baby from place to place. They’re easy to use, and they look great!

It’s even good for changing diapers on the lawn.

What? You don’t do that? Well, you could if you wanted to.

The indoor/outdoor play blanket by Silly Billyz makes it possible. Made of the same anti-pill fleece & nylon backing as the long sleeved bibs, these blankets are the ultimate in all-purpose. Soft fleece on the top makes a comfortable play surface and the waterproof nylon backing keeps baby dry. At 39.3 x 29.5 inches, they’re the perfect size for the stroller (nothing hangs on the ground – a refreshing change) and they easily fit into a diaper bag. They’re large enough to completely cover the big change tables in public bathrooms, and are absorbent on the fleece side for those pesky baby leaks.

Every parent needs that all purpose blanket that goes everywhere with you and can simply be tossed in the wash without thinking twice. The Silly Billyz indoor/outdoor play blanket is it.

Because it sounds better than puke reservoir…

It’s simple physics. What goes down must come up. If you’re a parent and you’ve never been puked on, I’m jealous. Some babies do it a lot and some only rarely, but if there’s one guarantee when you become a parent, it’s that you will get your chance to be covered in a little person’s bodily fluids.

It’s one of those rites of passage that you get used to, but it’s really aggravating when you take the time to put a cloth over your shoulder and when your little cutie pie spits up it runs onto the nice cloth, neatly down it and right onto your back covering your clothing and everything else in it’s path.

Enter the Burp Catcher.

Par.entrepreneur Margaret Pressler was tired of cleaning ‘burps’ (she’s way more polite than I…) and designed an ingenious burp cloth with a pocket that hangs open automatically when you place the cloth over your shoulder or arm.

Burp Catchers are made of soft flannel (packs of 2) or deluxe fleece (packs of 1) and are available for only $9.99 USD.

Sounds like a great idea, but does it really work?

Yes! We tested out the flannel Burp Catcher with two babies and four very different sized parents. Without fail, the pocket opened and the spit-up was trapped before making it’s way to the parents’ clothing.

Another awesome shower gift idea!

Win your own two-pack of flannel Burp Catchers. Send an email to theopinionatedparent[at]gmail[dot]com with BURP in the subject header and the answer to the question “How many children does Margaret have? (That’s a lot of burps to catch!) Contest closes Tuesday, March 13, 2007 at midnight MST. Congratulations, Marge!

Snot Be Gone!

Like most expectant parents, I bought a baby personal care kit while I was pregnant. It contained the adorable little nail clippers, a teeny comb and brush set, a thermometer and a completely useless piece of plastic that is supposed to be a snot sucker. (You might know it as a nasal aspirator. That’s far too formal sounding for our house.) Our son got his first mild cold at approximately 7 months old. I dug out the snot sucker with thoughts of magically clearing his sinuses, allowing him to breathe easy and us all to get some sleep. Hrmph. Not so much. No matter how I positioned it, it did nothing except make him increasingly mad. I resorted to saline and tissues and simply waited a week for sleep.

If only I’d had the Nosefrida Nasal Aspirator.

Recently brought to North America from Sweden by mom of two Kaisa Levine, this ingenious little snot sucker really lives up to it’s name. It was invented in Sweden by ENT’s and pediatricians, and has been used there and throughout Europe for years. When Kaisa’s young son got sick while visiting Sweden, she was instantly converted and was inspired to start Nosefrida USA to supply the rest of us.

Nosefrida looks a little scary at first but it’s extremely easy to use. It’s intended for children from newborn to approximately 3 years old (or whenever they become proficient nose blowers). You just place the end of the tube at the child’s nostril and the red part at the other end in your own mouth. Suck gently to begin with, increasing suction as necessary until you see those pesky boogers in the large tube. Sounds gross, right? The hygiene filter protects you from getting anything near your mouth, and is changed after each use. The large tube is easily washed with soap and water. Once you try it, you’ll see that it’s not gross at all. It’s extremely satisfying to be able to help your child breathe easy. Though my son still doesn’t enjoy having his snot sucked out (who would, really?), the Nosefrida is so efficient that he has a lot less time to get mad at me. We love that there are no worries about safety because the tube never goes inside the nose like other aspirators, so there’s no risk of damaging the nasal membranes and making the nose more swollen.

Nosefrida is a TOP Highly Recommended product and would make an awesome baby gift.

Nosefrida Nasal Aspirator? $15.00
Twenty spare filters? $2.50
A child who can breathe? Priceless

TOP readers receive a free package of hygeine filters with your Nosefrida purchase! Just enter “TOP free filters” in the comment box at checkout.

True luxury for your true love

Mother of two Deborah Nolan has been sewing since she was ten years old. Her talent for design is a true gift, and she shares it with the parenting world at Baby Starlet.

Her stunning Moses Baskets are currently available in six styles.

For little girls, I love her Elizabeth collection. This collection is pink flannel, satin and tulle and the skirt of the basket resembles a ballerina tutu. What little girl wouldn’t love to sleep in this? Personally, I don’t know if I’d pass this on to friends once my own children were done with it. I’d keep it for special dolls to sleep in and, one day, my grandchildren and great grandchildren. It’s just that beautiful.

For little boys or babies of gender yet to be determined, check out the Taylor collection, featuring an elegant sage and cream toile paired with a soft cream flannel. The basket is accented with cream satin ribbon in the ties and the skirt. All of Deborah’s baskets come with a padded bumper, slip covered mattress pad cover, decorative pillow and interlined blanket and are completely lined and finished by hand.

Truly works of art in bedding.

Check out her MySpace site for news about additions to her line and coupon codes.

Receive 15% off your Baby Starlet order with the code TOP2007.

You’ll find Baby Starlet in the TOP Shops!

Wow! One very (very!) lucky TOP reader will be the recipient of a beautiful and gender neutral Taylor moses basket prize package, pictured above, including matching pillow, blanket, burp cloths, receiving blankets and changing pad clutch. This prize is valued at over $300 USD and is quite possibly one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. To enter, send an email to theopinionatedparent [at] gmail [dot] com with BABY STARLET in the subject line and name two of the other gorgeous designs of Moses Baskets available at Baby Starlet. Because sleeves are not napkins. Really.

Mealtime at our house is getting increasingly messy. It’s not just the high chair, the floor, me and the dogs that are covered in food by the end of dinner. It’s all of the areas of our son’s shirt that are not covered by his bib.

Answer: Silly Billyz long sleeved bibs. (They’re sold in North America through Live Love Dream Inc. for only $12.)

Available in nine kid-approved colour combinations and 2 sizes, they’re made of anti-pill fleece on the front and rip proof nylon on the sleeves. (Rip proof = good for teething babies who chew their sleeves and anything else they can reach!) They have a velcro closure that’s large enough to make the neck adjustable – very handy for little people with teeny necks! My son tends to pull all but the most floppy terry bibs off because he gets too hot, but the open back feature of Silly Billyz long sleeved bibs allows him to stay nice and cool. He also has “issues” with many crinkly plastic bibs, but the sleeves of the Silly Billyz bibs are soft enough not to bother him.

Opinionated Parents are all about safety so we were pleased to hear that these bibs are PVC free! Surprisingly, many bibs are not. And an important feature for any bib – just toss them in the washer and dryer!

Order through this link for 15% off your entire purchase from Live Love Dream Inc!

Win it! We have a size large lime/royal Silly Billyz long sleeved bib for one lucky little person (who will soon have much cleaner sleeves!). Just send an email to theopinionatedparent[at]gmail[dot]com with Silly Billyz Bib in the subject line and the answer to the question What is one other Silly Billyz product available at Live Love Dream Inc? Fun, Fashion and Function for Little Feet

Though she grew up through the great depression, my grandmother always made sure she and her children had quality footwear. My own mother is the same way. They often say “You only have two feet and you use them all day long. Cheap shoes are not worth the price you pay in foot health and comfort.” They also raised me to believe that many adult foot issues are caused by cheap and/or incorrect footwear during childhood. (Note: by cheap, I don’t necessarily mean inexpensive. I mean in quality.)

When my son was born, I had no doubt that he would always have quality footwear. I’d rather spend a little bit of extra money to support his precious little feet than worry about his comfort and any future pain.

When The Opinionated Parent was given the opportunity to review Vincent shoes, I admit I probably got a little more excited than was necessary. We certainly have more shoes around here than the average family but I’m always excited to try new quality brands.

Vincent
footwear is, indeed, “a big step for small feet.” They are very solidly constructed with smart features such as stylish rubber toe caps to protect the leather from little people who are constantly stubbing and dragging their toes.

Swedish designers Patrick Österman and Thomas Elbaum are the creative forces behind Vincent Shoes and the company is a family affair named after Thomas’ nephew, which is pretty darn cool. That’s one famous little boy!

Our team reviewed two of the Vincent models, the Dennis and the William and we cannot say enough good things about these shoes. Not only are they extremely fashionable, but they’re comfortable, solid and seem like they will last through several children. The hand-me-down potential is great. Their styles for girls are just as adorable. Check out the designers’ notes accompanying each style for insight into the inspiration for the designs.

Pre-walker and early-walker styles are available, but we especially love Vincent shoes as the “next step” offering more support and a firmer sole without compromising comfort.

If you’re in the market for some great shoes, shop the Vincent winter clearance sale on now!

We have two pairs of fun, fashionable and functional Vincent shoes in the style and size of your choice (pending availability) to give to our lucky readers.

Send an email to theopinionatedparent [at] gmail [dot] com with VINCENT in the subject line and the answer to the question “If you could have any three styles of Vincent shoes, which would they be?” Good luck choosing ~ it’s not easy!

Contest closes at midnight on Friday, February 2, 2007.
Two winners will be randomly selected and contacted via email.
Congratulations to Tara of PEI, Canada and to Michelle of New Mexico, USA!

If there’s one thing you can trust Canadian moms to make well, it’s children’s boots!

Our son received his first pair of real winter boots from his paternal Grandma in early December. I had never seen a pair of boots like this before. They were Stonz, made by Canadian mom-trepreneurs Tracey Von Dehn and Lisa Will.

When we opened the package, I was immediately struck by
(a) how totally freaking adorable they were,
(b) the fact that they had no formed foot space, but were more “tube-like” so they would fit for a long time,
(c) the elasticized drawstrings at both the ankle and calf so they would very likely stay on,
(d) the warm fleece lining and the non-slip sole and
(e) did I mention that they look absolutely fabulous?

They’re available in some mega-cute but not pukey cute styles (We have “stripe.” My mother in law has good taste.)

Since we’re in Canada and it’s winter, we began using them immediately. Our son has worn them barefoot, with socks, over his Robeez and over his Robeez booties and they fit, are comfortable and stay on his feet.

Some of my favourite things about our Stonz, aside from the above list are:
-They have lovely soft soles for those precious little developing and learning to walk feet.
-They’re warm enough to keep his feet and ankles warm on a blustery walk yet not so heavy to prevent us from using them on a windy, rainy or cool day. (They’re water and wind resistant!)
-They’re soft enough that we can squish them right into his one-piece snowsuit comfortably.

We have received more compliments about these boots than any other article of clothing. And our kid has some pretty cool clothing!

Stonz are available in three sizes encompassing birth to three years, and because of their unique shape they really fit and stay on throughout the size ranges.

Oh, and they offer free worldwide shipping when you order your booties without the plastic packaging.

Fashionable, functional and environmentally sound. Does it get any better than that?

Cross your fingers, cross your toes and send me an email to muchmoreopinionated at gmail dot com with STONZ in the subject heading and the correct answer to the question “What are your four favourite styles of Stonz?” (It’ll be hard to pick – trust me.) Have your entry in by midnight on Friday, January 19, 2007.
Two lucky winners will be randomly chosen from all valid entries. Please specify in your email whether you would prefer to be entered for the “cow” or the “flowers” pattern. Update: Prizes are both size medium fitting 6-18 mos. Good luck! Congratulations to CPA Mom of Virginia, USA and to Cindy of Alberta, Canada!

Because Kids Spill Things

You know how frustrating it is when you give your child a bowl of his favourite snack in a little bowl, only to have it dumped irretrievably on the floor?

Answer: The Snack Trap.

Designed by supermom, Christine Moss, The Snack Trap is a clever child-sized bowl with two easy to grip handles and the smartest lid I’ve ever seen. The lids are made of supple rubber with six wedged slits so little fingers can reach in and painlessly grab their treats, and they can also tip it and shake it without losing any of their precious booty. When I purchased my first snack trap (they’re only around $5!), I fell instantly in love and bought several more as gifts. Each of my friends who has received them has loved them and continued to “spread the word.” My son, who is only 8 months old, can hold his own snack bowl and easily access his goodies. He can shake and bang it with very little spillage. (Unfortunately, The Snack Trap lid is so soft that it provides a nice cushion for our dogs’ tongues when the bowl is left on the floor.) The company has also recently developed a snap over lid, making it super easy to keep leftover snackies fresh and secure until next time. Love it!

Snack Trap also makes a variety of other products for the “on-the-go” kid. The Drink Deputy is a super solution to those tossed (read: germ covered) sippy cups. It attaches easily to the high chair, stroller or carseat, and is made of elastic so it hugs tightly to a variety of sizes of cups. The Sprout Spout and the Lil’ Topper turn commercial bottles into no-spill sippy cups! Great idea? I think so! However, when we drink from plastic we drink Aquafina and neither spout fit on the kind we currently have. Bummer. Must be our gimpy Canadian bottles.

You know you want to win a Snack Trap (one of the five I have to give away!), so email me at muchmoreopinionated at gmail dot com with SNACK TRAP in the subject heading and name one additional product from the company that is not mentioned in this review before midnight on Friday, January 12, 2007 to be entered in the random drawing. (Congratulations to Betty, Jenn, Lori, Aimee and Rhonda~your Snack Traps are on the way! Enjoy!)

Making little monkeys even cuter.

Robeez aren’t news, are they? Everyone has heard of Robeez’ shoes, or so it seems. But did you know that Robeez is a Canadian company?

It all started in 1994 when mom Sandra Wilson was downsized right out of a job. We all love a mom-trepreneur success story, right? Sandra’s story is an inspiration.

Living in the great white north (the very southern part of the north, mind you), my babe and his buddies wear the shoes in the spring and summer, and the booties in the winter.

Robeez has recently ventured into the apparel market and they’re doing a bang up job of it.

Robeez sent my little monkey the monkey apparel gift set for review and it’s awesome!

There are many things I love about this new product. (Aside, of course, from the freaking incredible cuteness evidenced by the photos of my son above and below.) They are so easy to clean and care for. I’m all about low-maintenance, whether the label says it is or not. Luckily, I won’t wreck these since all Robeez products are designed to be easy. I love the colour schemes – red and brown is my favourite combination right now, so the monkey is perfect for us (and monkey is one of the going nicknames around here) but the little cub and the cuddly kitty are also absolutely fab looking! Robeez always includes the little details that show pride of workmanship, like the tail on the back of the shirt and the shoes. Cute much?

I know I’m reviewing Robeez’ new apparel line here, but I just have to put a plug in for their footwear as well. I have, in my 8 incredible months of motherhood, received or purchased 6 pairs or Robeez shoes and/or boots and will continue to buy them until my son no longer fits into them. Luckily, that means we get to enjoy them until he’s four years old! They stay on his feet like no other product. In fact, in one of our baby groups we refer to them as “really cute sock holder onners.” I also like that they really fit for the whole 6 months stated on the size tag. They stay on easily when they’re a little large and continue to go on easily as little feet start to fill them to the seams.

The one suggestion I have regarding the Robeez apparel line? Make it in Canada. It’s made in India. Not that I don’t love the Indians. I do. I even married one. And you can’t beat a good Indian meal. I would prefer, however, to buy a product that is made in Canada by a Canadian company, and would even pay more for it if necessary.

Look for Robeez shoes, boots and apparel at a store near you, or order online! (Free shipping on orders over $75!)

If you’re wanting some Robeez this month (think Christmas – they ship fast!) then I recommend ordering online. For every pair of shoes or booties purchased on Robeez’ websites in North America, Europe, and Australia, a pair of shoes or booties will be donated to a child in need through Kids In Distressed Situations (K.I.D.S.) To date the Robeez’ Heart & Sole program has donated over 95,000 pairs of shoes and booties, a donation that would stretch almost 8 miles or 12.5 kilometers – almost three times the height of Mount Everest – if laid heel to toe. Robeez regularly provides shoes to children in China, Russia, Romania, Ethiopia, and throughout North America. What’s better than giving while you get some of the cutest outfits available for your kids?

I’m too old to match my clothes to my shoes, and even if I could get organized enough to match, what really matches mango and puke-stained pajamas? At least the matchy-match cuteness of my kid will draw the attention away from me, right?

I’d like to introduce you to my new best friend.

Her name is Mabel.

Okay, maybe Mabel’s not a real person, but her labels rock! Mabel’s Labels just might be the best thing since sliced bread, as they say.

Developed by a group of 4 (now related – cool story!) Canadian moms who were frustrated with losing their childrens’ items everywhere they went. They decided to form a business together and develop labels that were attractive, yet tough enough to go through the dishwasher and the microwave, and survive being left out in the sun & rain. For clothing, they needed to stick to many fabrics and withstand the washer & dryer. After lots of research and testing, they came to the conclusion that they’d developed the perfect labels. They claim that their “dishwasher- and microwave-safe stick-on-labels can be used on cups, bowls, toys, books, sunscreen bottles, lunchboxes, wipes containers, show-and-tell items, and more. The stick-in shoe labels are extra-tough, because shoes are tricky to label. Their iron-ons are so simple to apply, you’ll be amazed at what you can label!”

When I stumbled upon their site, I must admit I thought it sounded too good to be true. I have, and love, my label maker and it crossed my mind that maybe they were selling something I could easily make myself. Boy, was I wrong.

Mabel’s Labels are available in many different and highly useful categories. I tested out the sticky labels and the household labels. For reference, I compared them to labels printed from my household label maker.

I used the sticky labels on sippy cups, a travel wipes container and large toys. I’ve put them through the dishwasher multiple times (20 or more) and also in the microwave, and they just won’t die. (In this case, that’s a good thing!) Conversely, my homemade labels lasted a wash or two but then began to slip and mash together.

The household labels are just as awesome. Organizing is one of my addictions, and these super secure labels make it easy and fun. (Yes, I said it. It’s fun!) Even if you’re not a freak like me, these super cool (Canadian made!) labels will make the sometimes daunting task of organizing your belongings a little easier. If it’s not fun, it should at least look good! (Seriously, even the press kit they sent me was adorable and made me want to have these ladies over for coffee.) They thought of categories that even I didn’t think of. I now, thanks to Mabel’s Labels, have a ‘sell’ and a ‘donate’ bin in my basement which I am loving! I have also created a “Mend/Fix” bin and have gotten rid of my pile of grocery bags stacked with my sewing machine. They have labels to separate your stored childrens’ clothing from birth to size 6. There are labels for spices, food staples, holiday items, recycling and much more, all in one set!

Ordering is easy and secure from 84 countries worldwide. Shipping is free in Canada and takes up to 14 days (way less, in my experience), depending on Canada Post. It’s only $3 to the US and $5 worldwide, regardless of the size of your order.

I’m thinking…stocking stuffers?

What does a sprinkling wee-wee need?

Why, a pee-pee teepee by Beba Bean, of course!

These Canadian-made, 100% cotton cones are designed to cover the sprinkling pee-pee during diaper changes. Anyone with a son knows why that’s necessary. We were given these as a baby gift by a good friend, and the simple act of putting these into the parcel turned her into a great friend. In the few weeks between the birth of our son and the arrival of her package, we had both been peed on multiple times. We had pee on the dresser, pee on the change mat, pee on stuffed animals, pee on the carpet, pee in the drawers, pee on our clothing, pee on our faces…you get the idea. They’re such a simple concept, and yet so very intelligent. We have since packed them away for a future child (should we ever have another boy) but would gladly still be using them if they came in a larger size. (Not that my kid is extremely well-endowed or anything…ahem.) Any new parents of a little boy would be ecstatic to find these among their stash at their baby shower.

Beba Bean Designs was kind enough to send some products from their swanky line for review. I have in my hands a luscious chenille diaper cover that is soft and adorable enough to prevent you from ever covering it with pants! Also in this line are adorable soft chenille booties, hats and blankets. They all appear to be extremely well-made. I, for one, would have loved to receive these as a baby gift. Chenille is wonderful anytime, but for babies there’s nothing better. Soft, warm and cozy ~ just like your beautiful little miracle!

The thing that strikes me most about all of these Beba Bean products is their quality. There’s nothing ‘big box store’ about them. They have a feeling of something handmade by a loving and doting Grandma. A really stylin’ Grandma, but a Grandma nevertheless.

You can ENTER TO WIN some of Beba Bean Designs’ hot products. Send me an email to muchmoreopinionated [at] gmail [dot] com by midnight MST on Friday, December 1, 2006 with BEBA BEAN in the subject heading and the correct answer to the question Where was Lisa, the founder of Beba Bean, educated? Please include your preference of diaper cover & blanket or hat & booties. Winners will be chosen using a randomizer and will be notified via email on Saturday, December 2, 2006.
(Congratulations, Naomi and Catherine!)

Baby Buddy Nursing Pillow – The Only Pillow You’ll Ever Need

baby buddy nursing pillowThe Baby Buddy Nursing Pillow was the first gift I received after my son was born. It was expected, and it didn’t come a moment too soon.

When I was about eight months pregnant, we had one of my best friends as a house guest for the weekend. She is a mother of two and is as discerning [read: picky] as I am about many things. We took a trip to the local Toys ‘R’ Us to pick up a few things – baby bedding, receiving blankets and a nursing pillow. I hadn’t told her in advance what I was shopping for – only that we were getting some baby items. When I reached up toward the top shelf for the popular pillow, she shrieked. “You’re NOT going to buy that. It’s fine if you don’t know what you’re missing, but I’ll get you one that’s WAY WAY better!”

I hemmed and hawed because I didn’t want to have to learn to nurse in the hospital without a pillow. I had heard how difficult it can be and I wanted to be as comfortable as possible. She assured me that if she didn’t have it to me before our baby was born that she would make the two hour drive and bring it to the hospital.

Our son was born on a Friday morning. Saturday morning, in walks my best friend behind the biggest yellow lump of pillow I had ever seen. “It’s here, it’s here!” she said as she dropped it and came over to give me a hug and meet our new addition.

Over the next few months, my Baby Buddy Nursing Pillow was my constant sidekick. I never left the house without it. It was the fourth pair of hands when mine, my husbands and my mom’s weren’t enough. Learning to nurse can be a tough business. This pillow makes it (almost) easy. And definitely comfortable! I brought it in the van, in the bottom of the stroller, into restaurants – literally everywhere I went. If I went into a store without the pillow and my son got hungry, I’d run to the van to feed him where my pillow was!

Nursing has, thank goodness, become much easier. I no longer need my Baby Buddy to be comfortable, but it sure helps. It keeps my back from getting sore and it keeps my son safe and comfortable if we fall asleep in the glider in the dark of night.

My husband and our parents also love our pillow. Especially when our son was tiny, it made everyone feel much more secure while holding him. Even several six year old children from my class held him safely with the support of the Baby Buddy. It’s so wonderful that I think I may dedicate this one as ‘his pillow’ and buy any future child(ren) their own. I have a feeling they’ll love them for a long long time. Once the kids are old enough to stake claim, I may need to purchase one more. For me. I love to read and watch tv with it. It’s a great support for a large book on my lap and makes a wonderful snuggle pillow on the couch.

Our son has grown in to using the Baby Buddy as a support while learning to sit as well. It’s soft yet supportive, and large enough to provide a cushion when he inevitably topples over. It’s larger than most pillows on the market and is filled with hypoallergenic polyfill. Each pillow comes with a removable and washable pillowcase in your choice of many fabrics (and if you don’t find one you like, they’ll custom-make one just for you!).

See what others have to say about the Baby Buddy.

This pillow is definitely going to be one of my default baby gifts from now on. It’s one of the best gifts I received, and I’m proud to say it’s Canadian. Awesome, awesome product!
