A Ruffle On Your Butt Puts A Jump In Your Step

Rufflebutts bloomers review giveawayWith all of the toys and clothes out there posing as child-appropriate, [Bratz...ahem], it’s refreshing to find items that are really, truly childish.

If there’s one thing that’s really reserved just for little girls, it’s butt ruffles.

Parentrepreneur Amber Schaub created Rufflebutts to bring back the ruffled diaper cover of her own childhood. They’re fun, they’re frilly, and there’s no way you’d ever see a prostitute wearing one. (What does it say about our society that my criteria for appropriate children’s clothing has become so low?)

In addition to the most adorable diaper cover, Amber has designed an entire clothing line of 100% cotton tops, pants & dresses that are all priced under $50 and are all absolutely to-die-for cute. Just looking at the images of the Rufflebutts creations makes me smile. If you’re buying for my daughter, she’ll have this one because I just don’t think it gets any cuter.

Check out the Rufflebutts Spring 2008 slideshow here.

Win it! A bloomer in the size and colour of the winner’s choice is up for grabs. To enter, leave a comment on this post with the product colour & size you’d like to arrive in the mail if you’re the winner. Contest closes at noon MST on July 3/08.

Additional entries available – up to four per person. See contest entry information and rules.

Naturally, Protect-A-Bub Provides Sun Protection…Naturally.

protect a bub natural sun protection SPF 50+ sun suit review giveawaySince having children I, like many parents, have drastically reduced my usage of chemicals of all kinds. For me, that includes sunscreen. I do use it on every family member but I prefer to limit the amount of skin it’s on whenever I can and bathe or shower it off as soon as possible once we’re out of the sun’s rays.

Unprotected exposure to the sun in the first 15 years of life more than doubles the chances of getting skin cancer as an adult. Thanks to some fantastic products we’ve been using from Protect-A-Bub, we’ve been able to protect our little people from the risks of sun exposure a lot more naturally this year.

My two year old is perpetually outside (screaming wildly in his “outside boice,” but that’s beside the point) and is often sporting his UPF 50+ swim suit and hat. At less than $30, the Protect-A-Bub suits are comfortable and breathable and have the highest rating available for sun protection products. Available in sizes from 5 months to 5T and in a wide variety of one and two colour designs, there’s something there for everyone. The coordinating hat isn’t just a fashion statement. It looks adorable with the suit and alone and protects the vulnerable skin of the scalp to the same high degree that the suit does.

One often neglected area of little (and big) bodies are the lips. Our usual facial sunscreen applications do nothing for our vulnerable lip skin and non-SPF lip-stuff simply absorbs the sun and makes the problem worse. Now that my son is sporting his SPF 15 Lip Moisturizer we are a little more lenient about the time spent playing with the sun. It comes in three flavours and is only $2.25.

protect a bub natural sun protection SPF 50+ sun shade review giveawayIn addition to our enthusiastic un-sun-kissed two year old we’ve also got an amazing little five month old who is never left behind on our outdoor adventures. Being too young to wear any sunscreen at all, she can usually be found under one of the Protect-A-Bub sunshades. We absolutely love the inexpensive compact shade, but rarely use it on our stroller. (Though when we have, it works great as an extension of the canopy that’s already there.) We use the convenient ties to attach it to her bouncy chair on our deck and in our back yard every day. The shade rests on the toy bar and the ties keep it taut – it’s perfect and allows her to join us outside even in the hottest hours of the day.

With the increased awareness of both skin cancer and chemical exposure on the part of (we hope) all parents nowadays, we’re sure that Protect-A-Bub will be a welcome and awesome resource for parents who, you know, want to leave the house this summer.

Win it! Protect-A-Bub is giving away a compact stroller sunshade just like the one we love so much. To enter, visit the Protect-A-Bub site and browse their great selection. Come back and leave a comment on this post mentioning a product you think would be useful in your life before noon MST on July 1/08.

No Pinching, No Red Marks, And No Picking Shoes Up Off The Floor All Day Long

buskins leather baby shoes review and giveawayI have one of those babies who is barefoot 90% of the time, both because I love seeing baby feet and because she kicks off anything I put on her feet within minutes.

Or, she did. Until I discovered Buskins™ shoes.

When I am silly enough to cover those gorgeous little toes of hers, her Buskins actually stay on!

Outfitted with a stay-put Velcro closure around the ankle, genuine leather soft-soled Buskins shoes hail from Australia where they are handcrafted. With the strategic placement of the Velcro closure, Buskins are easy to get on and they stay on comfortably without the common rough elastic around the ankles of many shoes that can chafe or be too tight on chubby little ankles. They’re available in six sizes from newborn to 24 months and they retail for $28. There are 40+ styles for both boys and girls, many of which I’d love to add to the collections of my shoe-addicted children. (Oh wait, that’s me isn’t it?)

Buskins President and CEO Winnie Liu (also the owner of Jazzy Toes) took over the company in 2007 and has focused on not only great styles and designs but also on the packaging, which is perfect for gift giving.

Win it! Buskins is giving away a pair of their great shoes to one randomly selected winner. To enter, simply visit the Buskins site to choose your fave and leave a comment on this post letting us know the style and size you’d want if you win. Contest closes at noon MST on Friday, June 27/08.

Tooth Tissues – Dental Care Can’t Start Too Early

tooth tissues review & giveaway - baby dental wipes with xylitolIt seems there’s always something out there that is going to hurt the health of our babies. All the additives in foods, BPA in bottles, pesticides in our veggies, and even formula or sweet liquids will cause damage. Baby tooth decay is a common problem that can be prevented, but as a parent I understand how difficult it is to always follow “what’s best.” By that I mean that I don’t always brush my baby’s gums or my son’s teeth after eating or drinking. Why? Well, they don’t particularly like me coming at them with the tooth brush.

Tooth Tissues may very well be the best idea since sliced bread. They’re simply little disposable tissues that you can use to wipe your young one’s teeth or gums to keep them healthy! The simplicity of it makes it easy to carry in your diaper bag, in the vehicle, picnic basket, over night bag, or really anywhere! All you do is wrap the wipe around your finger and rub your baby’s gums or teeth, and if they’ve fallen asleep with a bottle or boob in their mouth it makes it way easier to soak up the left over liquid. Good luck trying to brush in babies’ mouths while they’re sleeping, but with Tooth Tissues there is hope!

Aside from the initial intention for Tooth Tissues, I’m pretty sure they’d be great for adults too! I don’t carry a toothbrush around with me so I can brush after meals while on the go, but I would carry Tooth Tissues. Just wipe and toss. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy!

Created by a couple that are dentists as well as parents, the priorities of both the medical world and the family world were addressed with the invention of Tooth Tissues. The tissues are 99% natural (check out their website to find out why they’re not 100%) and available in stores and online for a very reasonable price. What a great find. Buy yours online for just $6.99/pack or $4.00 for a dozen single packets.

Win it! We’re giving away a package of tooth tissues and a couple of single packets to one randomly selected reader. To enter, simply leave a comment on this post before noon MST on June 25/08.

Wallababies – Making it look like parents actually have time to decorate.

wallababies wall decals review giveawayAlthough there are many great reasons to have children, I have to admit one reason for me was having the opportunity to decorate a creative childrens’ space! My inner artist looked forward to painting beautiful murals that my children would gaze upon in awe and wonder.

I have moved four times since my not quite four year old was born. No beautiful paintings on the walls, no murals – just the basics that could be easily moved as we traveled the world. Add another kid into the mix and my days of painting murals have long passed – at least for now.

We have seen some cute wall decorations but when I saw WallaBabies, I squealed with delight! The designs are so retro adorable and NOT a licensed character from a television show! Just looking at the designs makes me (oh, and my kids) so happy. My daughter adores the bugs and my one year old keeps pointing at the bees … b…b…b. The designs are totally a hit!

Putting the wall graphics up was a snap, and took no time at all. In fact I did it myself. No need for my husband this time! The website has a great How To, that walks you through each step with no room for error. We have the Secret Garden Pack which consists of five 13″ x 14″ decal sheets. The perfect amount to decorate one wall beautifully or spread a little more sparsely throughout a whole room.

Now as my kids fall to sleep they are surrounded by clouds, flowers, insects and mushrooms and I can feel guilt-free for not painting them a mural! -Chelle

Win it! We’re giving away the same Secret Garden set that Chelle used and loved. To enter, leave a comment on this post before noon MST on June 19/08.

Got Snot? Get Boogie Wipes.

boogie wipes reviewWe’re deep in the midst of a summer cold that’s ravaging it’s way through our house. It came seemingly out of nowhere and quickly spread to every member of our family. I thought we were out of the snotty woods with the end of winter, but I was wrong. I’m thanking my lucky stars I discovered Boogie Wipes before this latest infestation and had some at the ready.

With the snot that abounds, it doesn’t take long before little noses become red and raw and little people become crabby and run from the tissues. Thanks to Boogie Wipes, I’ve now got a two year old that simply shouts “Need a Boogie Wipe – got boogers!”

Perhaps the saddest part of this family cold is our almost-newborn who doesn’t understand why I’m constantly smothering her – or so it seems – in order to rid her precious face of the elevens (a teacher term for the double snots) or why she can’t breathe and breastfeed at the same time. While it doesn’t make it any less sad, I do feel a little less mean because with Boogie Wipes at least I know it doesn’t hurt (they’re alcohol free) and the leftover crusties are super easy to get off. Even in the morning after ten hours of boogeying in bed!

Boogie Wipes contain saline and moisturize while they clean with added chamomile, vitamin E and aloe.

monkey tails blue zoo boutique reviewThose darn soothers…either you love them or you hate them.

No matter where you stand, if your kid is a sucky kid you just might be stuck with one.

If you are, there’s no better way to keep it off the floor and easily accessible than with Monkey Tails from mom-run Blue Zoo Boutique.

They start at just $10.95 and are 8-9″ in length 7/8″ wide. They’re just the perfect size for your baby or toddler. Monkey Tails attach to clothing with a silver mitten clip that has a plastic jaw to prevent clothing from tearing.

With all of the soother clips out there, you may be wondering what makes Monkey Tails unique from all the other soother holders on the market? Aside from the high quality construction, it’s the personalization option. Your child’s name (or the saying of your choice up to 8 letters) is added in silver alpha-blocks to a ring sewn right into the ribbon. The pictures on the site don’t do them justice – they are incredibly cute! With three pages of designs to choose from, there’s one for everyone on your new baby gift list.

Wupzey – It Catches What The Dogs Don’t

wupzey high chair food catcher reviewNow that my son is solely feeding himself “real” food, we have far less dropped food and a lot more launched food accompanied by the declaration that he’s “Sharing the puppies!” I don’t know that anything but time and patience will solve that issue, but I do know I would have LOVED to have a Wupzey high chair food catcher a year ago. I asked a friend with a newly self-feeding almost-toddler to check one out and let us know what she thought.

Jen says:

Available in ten colours, the Wupzey attaches quickly and easily to my standard high chair. It’s made of 100% Rip-stop Nylon and retails for under $20. I’m here to tell you that’s a small price to pay for the drastic reduction in cheerios that I now clean up! I used to sweep five to eight times a day and that’s been reduced to one good sweep before bed thanks to the Wupzey. This product belongs in the category “things you didn’t know you needed but love” along with many other of my favourite items. Thanks, Johanna, for a great product that reduces my daily workload!

Stuk On U

stuk on u velcro romper reviewWhen Jeanine Altreche had her baby boy, she developed a severe case of carpal tunnel syndrome in her hand – so severe that it was painful even to snap up his cute little jammies. With the sheer volume of diaper changes that are necessary with a baby, Jeanine decided to create her own solution to alleviate the pain, and Stuk On U was born.

Whether you have medical troubles or not, chances are you’ve been frustrated by missed snaps or woken a baby when you’ve had to zip open the entire sleeper and expose their chest just to change a diaper. Jeanine uses a patent-pending design of soft (and nearly silent!) Velcro down the chest and legs so you can open and close just the areas you need. The Velcro is sewn in such a way that it never touches baby, and it completely eliminates the risk of pinching delicate skin in a zipper.

Stuk On U rompers are tagless and the available in sizes 0-3, 3-6, 6-9, 9-12 and 18 months. They fit on the small size so order up if in doubt. (9-12 months fit my average size 4 month old perfectly.)

At just $11.99 (cotton) and $18.99 (fleece), a Stuk On U romper is a great alternative to snaps and zippers.

Minnies Cover the Piggies with Fine Fashion

minnies baby shoes reviewMy little sweetie has the most precious feet. No, seriously, they’re so cute that I could just kiss them all day! That might explain why I usually let her go barefoot and until recently have not put a pair of shoes on her sweet feet.

Well, that changed when I received a pair of Minnies baby shoes. The shoes are almost as cute as her feet! Note that I said “almost”, nothing really compares to her little piggies. That said, I did not hesitate to dress her little piggies with these beautiful pink corduroy shoes. They slipped on easy and they were kept in place by two silky smooth elastics accented with a pink butterfly!

After visiting Minnies website, I could see how much thought and effort are put in to these tiny shoes. They have four fabulous lines, including Funky Casuals, Kickin’ Sneakers, Chillin’ Boots, and Sweetalicious Mary Janes. They restock their line twice a year in the spring and in the fall, always being sure to keep on top of the “what’s new” in the baby fashion world. To top it off, the material used to make these fab little shoes is carefully tested to make sure it lives up to the strictest safety standards!

Minnies are some seriously funky and functional footwear for those sweet little feet in anyone’s life. They are available in sizes 1-4 for pre-walking baby girls and boys. Launching just this spring, Minnies will be found in specialty stores and boutiques across North America and in Europe. - Andrea

[Ed: The Minnies site is driven by flash (not good) and has auto-play sound (also not good) but the shoes? Rock.]

Tote and Tee

tote and tee birthday tee reviewSee that picture right over there?

That’s my two year old son’s debut at The Opinionated Parent.

As he’d say…”Ta dah!”

I’ve never posted any of my kids here before, but he just looked so cute in his stars birthday tee from Tote and Tee that I couldn’t resist!

The nifty tees at mom-owned Tote and Tee are so incredibly awesome I’m almost speechless. That could also be the cuteness of my kid rendering me so, but nevertheless…

Designer Amy Trusler hand makes each tee in her own home. They’re available in a huge variety of colours and styles and the amazing array of fabrics can be applied in any letter or number to suit the little people in your life. Too bad it’s not cool to advertise “32!” because I’d totally do it if I could get away with it. (I’d look good in this style!)

tote and tee knee socks reviewThey also carry the cutest (and softest – -wow soft!) knee socks and tights I’ve ever seen. The socks have a slight roll down at the top so there’s no digging in but they’re just tight enough to stay up.

And these personalized lunchboxes? (The “tote” part of Tote and Tee.) To die for. Figuratively, of course. (I think this one would look great with my imaginary “32″ tee. Alright. I’ll stop now.)

Amy is currently holding her Biggest Sale Ever until the end of May with all socks and tees on sale!

Sometimes, Flipping Me Is A Good Thing.

flipper toothbrush holder review.jpgI’m always shocked when I clean our bathrooms thoroughly (not often enough, but that’s another story) and see the mung that lives in the bottom of the toothbrush holders. That’s some serious grossness. With everything I do to keep my family safe from harm, I’m letting them put that crap near their mouths?

I’m won’t be concerned for long because I’m switching them all out for Flipper toothbrush holders. These cute and sanitary individual toothbrush holders adhere to mirror or tile with suction cups and allow for completely hands free operation with no chance of cross-contamination from brush to brush. They’re super easy to use (see the product demo at the right side of the home page) and when they get dirty I just toss mine in the toddler basket in the dishwasher and it’s good for another 10,000 miles.

They make a great razor holder too!

Don’t Lose it. Label it!

I’m a labeling freak. There are labels everywhere in my house – even the bin that holds the labels is labeled!

lovable labels reviewLovable Labels is a Canadian mom-run company that carries a large selection of customized labels as well as some cool stuff to help a mom around the house. Goodness knows I need all the help I can get.

My kids especially love their unique fun stickies that are shaped like butterflies and dinosaurs and are available in lots more cool shapes (pictured at right). Believe it or not, they’re less likely to leave their things lying around the park when they have their own special label on them. And for those days when they do, I’ve got a better chance of getting them back eventually!

Have a child with allergies or medical issues? Check out these cool vital ID wristbands. The kids I know would be much more comfortable wearing those than a metal bracelet. And while you’re looking for things that make your kids ecstatically happy? Personalized notecards and way cool books would be fantastic gifts. Is it too early to shop for stocking stuffers? I think not.

Mention that you heard about Lovable Labels through the The Opinionated Parent during the checkout process and receive 15 FREE Red Regular Sticker Bonus Labels with your purchase. One per family. Expires May 30, 2008.

Baby Zabu is Multifunctional Luxury

wagamama baby zabu reviewNow that I’ve got two children with tentative plans for more (did I just say that?) I have had to find ways to make this baby a lot more portable. While I’m a devoted baby wearer, it’s not always comfortable or convenient and sometimes my two year old just wants to have his mama all to himself. For those times, I am in love with the baby zabu™ from wagamama baby.

Whassa wagamama? (That’s exactly what my husband and my son both asked. Genetics much?) It means “spoiled rotten” in Japanese.

My own spoiled rotten baby now gets to enjoy the great outdoors and the living room floor alike in the zabu, a luxuriously soft mat with tie-up soft bumper walls that’s a playpen alternative for babies of the non-mobile variety and a playpen insert for when you need a little more security with added padding and cleanliness. Leave it untied for a great playmat too.

When you’re done, the baby zabu™ rolls up like a way cushy yoga mat and comes with a coordinating shoulder strap for travel or storage.

The baby zabu™ is currently available in two sizes and nine styles which include two eco-friendly bamboo options and range from $88 – $135.

baby spare wear reviewAs a bit of a major clothing snob, I hate to package up one of my kids’ nice and rather costly outfits for the inevitable poop explosion, accident or mud fight. Nothing like carrying a $70 outfit around in your diaper bag until it’s too small.

baby spare wear reviewI was so excited to discover babysparewear, where for $30-$52 you can get a complete outfit or two in a zippered waterproof travel pouch just for situations like that. Babysparewear is made for both babies and toddlers by creative mom Veronica Milito. Babysparewear are “chic, “emergency” travel kits with key items to mix-and-match or wear as an outfit. A modern approach to a simple idea.”

The outfits in the pouches are super soft & super comfy yoga-style duds that kids won’t mind changing in to and even the most fashion conscious parents won’t mind putting on the kids. Spare Yourself the Blood

baby light and clipWhen you’ve got a precious little newborn scratching the heck out of their face, you’re faced with the daunting task of cutting their paper thin yet talon sharp nails. Sounds easy, right? Not so. All too often, the nail and the skin seem one in the same and both get cut. Those little fingers have a lot of blood in them!

The Baby Light & Clip helps make the task easier, featuring an integrated light under the clipper that illuminates the area underneath the nail, allowing you to easily see which part needs to be trimmed (and which parts shouldn’t!) and reveals sharp nail edges. There’s also a small compartment that catches baby’s nails as they fall and safety guards covering the corners of the clipper. The Baby Light & Clip is powered by one AA battery and retails for $14.99 at Amazon.

And even when I have it it’s not always easy to dig to the bottom to find the puny little change pad that came with it. At Butt-Ums Up Baby, there’s a great solution to both of those issues. Their changing pads have several advantages over the typical ones.

1. They’re the longest I’ve ever seen. Even my 22 month old fits on it easily.
2. There’s a pocket at the top end that easily holds a wipes case (included) and a couple of diapers. It’s not zippered, so it’ easy to get the things you need with only one hand while the other hand holds down the poop covered child that’s trying to escape.
3. It rolls up into a compact package and secures with velcro.
4. That same velcro makes it easy to open with one hand. while you’re holding the above mentioned poop covered child with the other.
5. There’s a buckled loop attached at one side that makes it easy to clip it to a stroller or purse.
6. They come in your choice of twelve gorgeous chenille fabrics and are all lined with vinyl.
7. They’re all machine washable and dryer safe.

Entrepreneurial mom Stacy Sager is the talent behind Butt-Ums Up Baby and she also makes gorgeous matching blankets in the same luxurious soft chenille fabric with silky satin trim and binding.

The change pads retail for $40 and the blankets range from $25-$108.

Win a Butt-Ums Up Changing Pad in your choice of fabric! To enter, leave a comment on this post stating which of the twelve fabrics is your favourite. Bamboosa

bamboosaWith a newborn in my house again, I’m reminded daily of the precious soft skin that we’re nurturing (we hope) when we purchase bathing products.

I’ve recently discovered another great online shop that caters to those of us who want not only to nurture our children but also the earth. Bamboosa makes one of the softest and most absorbent hooded towels I’ve had the pleasure of using.

They’re 30″x30″ – large enough for a toddler – and are made of 80% bamboo and 20% recycled polyester. The ‘purely natural’ colour, which is my personal fave, contains absolutely no dye. As with all of their baby products, it’s made in America in a sweatshop free plant.

Enter the code TOP10 for 10% off any Bamboosa order.
You’ll find Bamboosa in the TOP Shops, where we feature exclusive discount codes just for opinionated parents.

Win It! We’ve got a BambooBaby Gift Set 3 in your choice of colour up for grabs! To enter the random draw, email theopinionatedparent@gmail.com with Bamboosa in the subject line before midnight MST on 2/15/08 and tell us the names of all three available colour choices for this set AND the colour that you’d choose if you are the winner. To be valid, entries must include that information as well as your full name and mailing address. Feel free to include a blog link if you’d like us to link you if you win. See below for more information. Winners are notified via email and first names are published with the post unless you ask us not to do so. Good luck!

BabyBam

If you read T.O.P. daily (if you don’t, you’re missing out on some great stuff!) then you know how much we love all things natural, safe and soft. And so it is with great pleasure that I introduce you to my newest find, BabyBam Collection.

baby bam collection

Eco-friendly babies and parents alike will love the unparalleled softness that BabyBam offers in their bamboo & organic cotton combination. This fabulous mixture is hypo-allergenic, anti-bacterial and thermal regulating. All of the BabyBam apparel is natural in color, using no bleaches or dyes, and the silkscreens and tagless tags use low impact dye.

Currently the clothing line includes a onesiea, pants and a sleeper style pajama, both of which are amazingly soft & silky and just the thing I’d recommend putting against your new baby’s delicate skin. After washing I’d swear that they get even softer!

They also have a new line of bamboo body products in their bath time line including the best bum cream I’ve ever tried. Seriously? I’d use it on my own butt if I could get away with it. ;-)

baby bam collection bath towelsAlso part of their bath time line, BabyBam has recently added a brand new hooded towel & washcloth set to their collection. It’s incredibly absorbent and fast drying and is completely free of pesticides and chemical treatments so there’s no concern about skin allergies and irritations. Bamboo is also naturally anti-bacterial and odour free which is great for the wet environments in which you’d generally need a towel.

All of these fabulous products are available for purchase at the BabyBam Collection online shop and select stores.

Founded by mom of two Jody Graziano Jonas, BabyBam Collection is the kind of company we really like to get behind. Watch for upcoming guest posts on the subject of raising a green baby written by Jody and cross-posted from her own blog. As part of her environmentally responsible policies, she packages all of the BabyBam products in recycled, re-used, or recyclable packaging – everything from the tissue paper to the ribbon to the box it is shipped in. In addition, BabyBam regularly makes contributions to The Arbor Day Foundation and the Sierra Club. Love it!

You can win a onesie and pant set from BabyBam Collection with your choice of pink, blue or green heart on the pants. To enter the random draw, send one email to theopinionatedparent@gmail.com with BABYBAM (copied exactly) in the subject line and tell us which of the gift sets is your favourite. Merry Christmas, from all of us to all of you. Enjoy the most precious people in your life this holidays season!

Silikids is a company run by two moms that specializes in cool silicone products for kids. So far there are four products in their line up, each of which are equally cool.

SiliskinsWhether you put breastmilk or a substitute in to a bottle, you’ve got to be concerned about all of the chemicals from plastic that we now know without a doubt leach into the liquid and are linked to all kids of horrible illnesses. We know that glass bottles are the best if you choose to use a bottle but, though they’re thick and safer in many ways than plastics, it’s still a little scary to put glass in the hands of a child. Especially once they learn to throw.

Siliskins, pictures at right, come in 4oz. & 8 oz. sizes and are translucent silicone ‘bottle condoms,’ for lack of a better term, that are microwave safe, hypo-allergenic and dishwasher friendly. They allow you to easily see how much is in the bottle, make it easy & safe to hold and also protect it if it should fall. As a test, we dropped one from a height of 5 feet onto both a carpeted and a linoleum floor and there was absolutely no damage to the bottle or the skin.

Some bottle covers can only be used with a proprietary bottle but Siliskins are designed to fit the Evenflo glass nurser which is easy to find across the continent. The 8 oz. retails for $12 and the 4 oz. for $10, and both include one bottle.

SilipadsIf you’ve got a little crawler, check out these awesome Silipads – silicone knee pads. If you’ve tried it with your kids, you are well aware that crawling can hurt! Silipads are super cute and available in four hip & bright colour combos (seen at left), easy to get on and off and machine washable. Now that’s what I’m talking about! Silibibs

Last but not least in the Silikids lineup is the Silibib – a food grade silicone bib that lies completely flat against the chest and didn’t even stain when we used it at a spaghetti dinner. Miraculous? I’d say. It wipes clean easily with a wet cloth or you can just toss it in with the dishes for a thorough cleaning.

I think I’m in love with silicone and, therefore, with Silikids.

We’ve got one 4 oz. and one 8 oz. bottle in Siliskins to give to one lucky reader. To enter the random draw, email theopinionatedparent@gmail.com with Silikids in the subject line by midnight MST on 12/31/07 and tell us one good reason to use silicone (from the website, please). Congratulations Lucinda!

Please include your full name and mailing address with your entry, and a blog link if applicable so we can link you up if you win. Entries without a mailing address are invalid. (Please note that these are deleted after the draws and are never sold or given to anyone.)

Febe Bebe

Febe Bebe bib collection“You should never sacrifice style just because you happen to drool.”

That’s the very true motto of Canadian par.entrepreneur Sarah Howard and her company Febe Bebe.

Febe Bebe bibs and droolers (a smaller version of the bibs) are 100% vinyl free and are individually handmade in Canada. They incorporate fine fabrics and a sophisticated style while still being quite appropriate for the folks in your life that drool. And no teddy bears or ducks. Hooray!

They wash beautifully and are pre-shrunk so there’s no shrinkage at all. (Very important for the washing impaired such as myself.) All of the seams are double stitched for durability and the quality of crafts(wo)manship is evident even at first glance.

Enter to win a bib & drooler set from Febe Bebe valued at $36 with a simple email entry — email theopinionatedparent@gmail.com with FEBE BEBE in the subject line by midnight MST on 12/17/07 and tell us which of the 13 available fabrics you’d choose.

Include your full name and mailing address. (And if you have a blog for us to link to if you win, include that too!)

One winner will be selected at random from all qualifying entries

Congratulations Grenda!

Downtime for baby = Good time for me!

downtime hat If you have ever had a baby, you know how frustrating it is when they go from the “sleep anywhere any time no matter what” newborn phase to the “blackout blinds no movement no anything” picky sleeper phase. Par.entrepreneur Andrea Verity knows that transition all too well but she was smart enough to do something about it. She developed the Downtime Sleepy Hat when her son made that unwelcome transition.

The hat is made of soft & luxurious organic cotton and looks like a normal hat – until you flip down the flap over baby’s eyes. As you can see in the picture at right, the hat becomes an effective visual stimulation & light blocker once flipped down and is also outwardly expressive. As in, it tells those little ladies who insist on touching your kid that it’s not an appropriate time. In addition to the company’s great low impact policies and the downright brilliant idea, I love the safety aspect of the Downtime Sleepy Hat – unlike masks made for older folks it has no strings or other hazards that could be dangerous to baby.

Here’s to all of us getting some sleep!

Win a Downtime Sleep Hat of your choice! (The contest is only available to readers in Canada & the US – sorry!) To enter, email theopinionatedparent@gmail.com by midnight MST on 12/11/07 with DOWNTIME in the subject line and tell us one of the four things that the company does to reduce their impact on the environment. (See: Our Story) Please include your full name and mailing address with your entry. Congratulations Megan!

Going Ga-Ga

ga-ga online logoWhen I was pregnant with my first child, I thought for sure I had enough blankets and would never need any more as longs as I lived. Then, when I ran out of blankets after about three days home from the hospital and hadn’t recovered enough from my labour and surgery to do laundry yet, I realized that a mother can never have enough blankets.

ga-ga online blanketYou use them so often and for so long that it’s especially nice if they’re snuggly and worthy of the public eye. Ga-Ga Online has a selection of luxuriously soft and well-made blankets that fit the bill. There’s the dinosaur pattern shown here and also an airplane, flower and butterfly pattern. They’re all very simply designed and extremely cozy. They’re also just the perfect size for the floor, crib or stroller.

I think you’ll find that Ga-Ga Online has a lot more than just blankets you’ll want to check out! For example, these absolutely fabulous and totally non-toxic wooden toys. Your purchase helps the disabled adults that make them, and we think that’s simply wonderful.

Sign up for the Ga-Ga Online mailing list and get 10% off your order! Simply click here, and include the message “I came from The Opinionated Parent.” The magical little elf that lives inside their computers will fire you back a discount code so you can place your order!

Protect those precious folds

When an expecting parent buys their first carseat, they don’t often look for the extras. You know, things that seem totally unnecessary and not worth the extra price of the deluxe model. That is, until your baby is crying all the way to Grandma’s because the carseat strap is irritating her delicate neck skin. Only then do you realize how necessary things like strap covers really are.

pink dixie strap coverPink Dixie to the rescue. Owner Shannon Carroll makes a line of perfectly necessary shearling strap covers perfect for the carseat, high chair or stroller. They’re 5 inches long so provide enough coverage for even big kids and they’re a steal at only $8-$12. They’re reversible to cotton for the cooler months and the shearling side has a cute cotton accent at the end as well. They’re super easy to attach and stay on securely with a full velcro backing.

Tell me this chubby beauty pictured at the Pink Dixie site doesn’t look happy to have her adorable neck protected! (Yep, they’re as soft in person as they look in the pictures!)

We’ve got a set to give away! To enter, email theopinionatedparent@gmail.com with PINK DIXIE in the subject line by midnight on 11/1/07 and tell us the standard sizes that Pink Dixie offers in most of their items. (Though Shannon will custom make any item in a special size – just email her!) Congratulations Lois!

Happy Halloween from all of us to all of you!

Freshly Baked

I love Georgie Tees for so many reasons.

(Yep, we’ve reviewed their stuff before and they’re back with more!)

freshly baked onesie They’ve added a new onesie, “freshly baked,” to their already fab line. It’s only available in newborn sizes and is the perfect baby shower gift! As with all Georgie Tees, the onesie is tagless and super-soft. And funny! Because Georgie Tees are always all about the funny. (Check out the 50% off onesies too!)

mama lisa teeThe gals from Georgie Tees have always had great maternity novelty tees but have recently added a new artistic line offering a more creative take on pregnancy. The tees are custom-made with enough stretch for the perfect fit before, during and after pregnancy. I love this tee not only for the great design that’s appropriate during pregnancy and forever after as a mama, but for the awesome fit and amazing stretch. It’s snug without being grossly revealing and pops right back to it’s original shape. Another bonus? It’s long enough to cover the tall gal’s pregnant belly and gathers nicely on the non-prego figure. You won’t believe how soft it is until you touch it yourself!

Check out the freshly baked blog too.

Save 15% at Georgie tees with the code “opinionated” in the comments section at checkout.
You’ll find Georgie Tees in the TOP Shops where we feature permanent & exclusive online shopping discounts for T.O.P. readers.

WeeGo Goes Where You Go…Safely.

weego bottleMy first child never once drank from a bottle. To be honest, it never concerned me at all because I nursed until he self-weaned onto a cup and I was never away from him for more than a couple of hours anyway. I was just going for a back up plan should anything have happened to me so that my child wouldn’t starve. I really didn’t want him to eat out of anything plastic anyway.

However…for the next one soon to arrive, I’m hoping for slightly more success on that front to allow me to spend some 1-1 time with my oldest that doesn’t revolve around the hourly nursing sessions that are bound to happen. However, being the *ahem* …persnickety…mother that I am I will not be putting my ‘liquid gold’ into a plastic bottle that leaches carcinogens. I’ve looked for glass bottle and they’re rather hard to come by in Hickville, Canada. When I have found them they were not very attractive (granted, not the most important factor) and didn’t look all that safe to me past the point of feeding a baby that literally doesn’t move in your arms.

And that’s why I was giddy to find the newest bottle on the scene from BabyLife – the Wee Go bottle. It’s your typical (recyclable) glass bottle with a non-toxic, non-plastic silicone sleeve that not only helps babies and parents keep a solid grip but also protects the bottle from breakage in all but fairly extreme drops. The bottle, sleeve and new French nipple can both be boiled or can go through the dishwasher together or alone. (If you have an old sample like the one we’re giving away below, the non-toxic silicone nipple needs to be hand-washed.) The ring, plug and cap are plastic, but are food grade, polycarbonate-free and also recyclable. At $18 for each bottle they’re not for everyone (or not several days worth anyway, but one or two might be do-able) but they’re certainly the best option I’ve seen for older bottle-lovers and out-of-the-house bottle feedings. And persnickety moms like me.

WeeGo bottles will be available in early November.

We’re giving one away in “sky” along with a white 3-6 month onesie from BabyLife. To enter, email theopinionatedparent@gmail.com with WeeGo in the subject line before midnight tonight and tell us the name of one other sleeve colour that’s available. Congratulations Shaila!

Don’t let them sucker you buying into a change table when one of these will do the trick.

diaper caddy imageAnyone who’s had a baby knows that if you aren’t well prepared you’ll often be running stairs just to change a diaper or you may even have a package of diapers and wipes laying in every room just to avoid the hassle. Since that looks, well…crappy, you’ll be very pleased to know about the SaraBear diaper caddy available from the fab online retailer The Polkadot Platypus. Available in six colours including my fave pictured at right, this well-planned basket is perfect for storing changing convenience right at your fingertips without completely ruining the flow of your decor. You know…if that’s important to you. I don’t know many people who go all the way to their child’s bedroom to change a diaper after the first few hazy weeks so why don’t we just make it easy on ourselves from the start? (You know that gorgeous hunk of wood taking-up-valuable-space changing table you bought and set up in the nursery upstairs? Do yourself a favour and return it now.)

Whether you love the diaper caddy for style reasons or not, I guarantee you’ll love it for the function. The removable and washable fabric insert has five fitted compartments and four pockets in the perfect sizes for a baby wipes container, diapers, creams, burp cloths and anything else you might need. I’m a big fan of anything that makes a parent’s life easier and this is one product that will do both that and look a whole lot better than the alternative. I sure wish I had one when I was a new mom!

The Polkadot Platypus always offers free shipping on orders over $75.

Win a SaraBear diaper caddy of your choice from The Polkadot Platypus! To enter, email theopinionatedparent@gmail.com before midnight MST on 10/9/07 with Polkadot Platypus in the subject line and tell us the name of your favourite diaper caddy style. Congratulations Betty!

Ingenuity keeps baby cozy and looking great.

lillebaby eurotote imagesA friend of mine who had her daughter just a few weeks before my son was born was often distraught when trying to find the things she really wanted for her baby in local stores. She’s from Germany where toys aren’t coated in lead and toys aren’t generally plastic and loud, and shopping in Canada was extremely disappointing. She often came back with almost a plane-load from her visits home to Germany of things she couldn’t get here, most of them organic, natural and/or o extremely intelligent design.

I clearly remember her describing a stroller insert that “everyone in Europe” uses when they walk their babies for the entire few hours of nap time at all times of year. When I opened the box of the EuroTote from Lillebaby I found myself wishing she was having more babies because I had finally found it for her!

The EuroTote is a fabulous new product that is really five products in one. It’s a moses-style carrier, a car seat cover, a warm stroller bag, a play blanket and a bunting bag. You might even be able to think of more. There are so many great features that it’s going to be a challenge to remember them all but I’ll sure try!

-It’s non-toxic and machine washable, both a must for anything that’s going near your child.
-It’s one size fits all from newborn to 3 years and comes with two interchangeable covers, a warm one for winter and a mesh one for summer, and the zippers are two way for ease of use.
-The board that keeps baby secure when using the EuroTote as a moses carrier is removable for comfort in the other applications.
-It comes in four great colour combos.
-In case you’re paranoid like me, it has been crash tested and shown not to interfere with car seats.
-Safety straps, both 3 and 5 point, secure directly over the child so there’s no fear of over-cushioning the straps.
-It adjusts in length so that it always fits your child comfortably.
-The lining is 100% cotton and is SO soft and cozy.
-It has a 180° buckle system which makes it very secure for even the tiniest of babes.

We tested out the EuroTote with a 2 month old (as a moses carrier), an 8 month old (as a play blanket and a carseat cover) and a 17 month old (as a stroller bag). In all cases the EuroTote was very easy to use, despite our initial apprehension. The children all seemed very comfortable in it and in the case of the stroller bag it was absolutely wonderful to know that the little guy was snuggly and warm and that there was no risk of a blanket blowing off him on the very cool fall day that we did our testing.

The Lillebaby EuroTote retails for $120 USD. Click here for a list of retailers.

Kohlr Baby Sleepsack

kohlr baby organic sleepsackI am officially in love with this fabulous organic hemp & cotton sleepsack from one of our new all-Canadian faves Kohlr Baby. It retails for $63 which is a very reasonable price for such a safe and high quality product that your child will wear for up to 12 hours a day (for your sake, we hope it’s at night) for 6+ months. The non-organic alternative is just $48 but it’s worth the extra $15 for organic if you’re concerned about chemicals and your baby. At least that’s our opinionated opinion.

Sleepsacks are available everywhere of late, and in almost every price range. I think it’s great that people are becoming more aware of the hazards of giving babies blankets and are turning more toward this safe and practical alternative. By investing in a quality sack from Kohlr Baby you’re really investing in a better sleep for the whole family. Middle of the night diaper changes are quick and easy with the great bottom access zipper that goes all the way up in to the arm pit in case of a major in-sleep-blowout. Our reviewer loved the light, soft corduroy feel of the organic sleepsack and chances are your child will love it too, along with the great sleepy sheep appliqué and soft tags attached. If you’re more of a fleece person you can rest assured that only top grade athletic fleece is used and liquids like sweat are quickly wicked away from your baby’s soft skin.

Designer Jill Koehler has done everything right with this company. Among many other things, we love the alternatives for the organic mama, the ‘zero waste’ manufacturing policy and an awesome no hassle 100% satisfaction lifetime guarantee. What have you got to lose?

Win a blankie buddy from Kohlr baby in the beautiful and gender neutral butternut and moss colour scheme valued at $20! To enter, email theopinionatedparent@gmail.com with KOHLR in the subject line but midnight MST on 9/25/07 and tell us another item that’s available from the website. Congratulations ‘Organic Girl’!

Why settle for the ordinary?

Not even the changing table has to be plain anymore.

(ubi - a modern changing table)Mom & mechanical engineer Sue Wong has designed the newest & in our humble opinion (heh) the coolest changing table on the market today. New to the baby market in September, the ubi is not only extremely functional (with the diaper dispenser, fastener strips to hold the diaper in place and super-easy wipe clean fabrics) but it’s absolutely fabulous to look at. So much so that you might just leave it in your living room instead of making the trek to the nursery for changes. (At least until baby starts solid foods anyway. Then you might want to get as far away as possible.) The clean design doesn’t just look good, however. It works. The clean lines make those unfortunate explosions easy to clean up and the height is a perfect mix of floor & table. It’s comfortable for the back (and the post cesarean belly) yet isn’t high enough to cause serious injury if an active baby squirms off onto the floor. It does come with a safety strap that is not shown in any of the online images.

There are two styles, the basic and the deluxe, which retail for $89 and $119 respectively. The ubi comes in your choice of six stunning fabrics and two colours of wood.

The ubi is available online and in select stores starting in September 2007 or from the ubi site directly.

So Chic

chic n carry wristletMoms and par.entrepreneurs Michele Good and Jennifer Chow are the brains behind Chic Tots, a fab online boutique. Self-described as “lazy moms,” they’ve designed a selection of products to simplify their world and yours. Though with designs as chic as these I can pretty much guarantee they’re not lazy at all. Just smart.

The Chic & Carry wristlet (pictured top right) is a great little grab and go bag with room for a few diapers and the matching soft wipes case that comes with it. The wrist strap snaps to the bag snugly for hanging on a handlebar or strap and it also includes a caribiner.

chic n cozyMy very favourite, the Chic & Cozy Blanket Bag (pictured at left in chocolate swirl) is a rather ingenious design. It’s a shoulder bag large enough to tote a plethora of baby stuff with you (and you know you do) and some important mom stuff too. The more you gather the fabric, the longer the straps. If you’re not the shoulder bag type, you can twist the straps and tuck them under the velcro to turn it into a tote bag. A powerful magnet sewn inside keeps the top of the bag closed.

Here’s the coolest part…when you ungather the side of the bag and velcro the straps in snugly, it opens into a super soft oval minky blanket. One less thing to weigh you down.

We’ve got a chic n’ carry wristlet in “fuschia bloom” to give away. To enter, email theopinionatedparent@gmail.com with CHIC TOTS in the subject line and tell us one other fabric pattern that the chic n’ carry comes in. Contest closes Friday night at midnight MST. Congratulations Jennifer!

Boobs are great, but we understand if you don’t want everyone to know just how great yours are.

Learning to nurse is enough of a challenge for many moms that they don’t need to worry about flashing at the same time. While we’re of the opinion that boobs are for babies and if you don’t want to see them – don’t look, we do understand that the risk of flashing stresses many moms out. Though we don’t agree with covering up for other people’s comfort, we’re all for YOUR comfort and we think you’re better off doing it in style! There are a plethora of ugly & bulky nursing covers & capes available today that shout “I’m breastfeeding!” and/or “I have no sense of style now that I’m a mother!” and we think you deserve better than that.

generation baby nursing coverThe nursing covers from Generation Baby, a mom-run Canadian company, are about as fashionable and functional as a nursing cover’s going to get.

We tested out the beautiful chocolate damask pattern and it’s stunning. The fabric is a light & airy cotton and the pattern is such that you could easily wear it as a dress and you’d look fabulous. (It’s the top one pictured at right.) All of the nursing covers are machine wash & dry and feature an adjustable neck strap. It wasn’t long before my son figured out how to disengage the velcro & snaps on my nursing covers (which were, incidentally, incredibly ugly compared to this one) and a receiving blanket worked for about a week before I gave up altogether so I was pleased to hear from our reviewer that the fastener on the Generation Baby cover was easy for her to manipulate but no matter how hard her daughter pulled it didn’t come off. They’re large enough to cover mothers of all sizes (and to be used as a light blanket or stroller sun shade, which came in handy during our review due to the +40 C temps) and the rigid neck line makes it easy for mom to see baby without letting anyone else take a peek. Lastly, being that it’s very light cotton, it folds & fits easily in a diaper bag or even in a pocket.

We don’t think you need to cover up, but if you want to you deserve to look good at the same time.

When your kid has a giant poop explosion while you’re out of the house and it’s in a favourite/expensive/heirloom outfit that you can’t just toss in the garbage. Where exactly are you going to put the poop soiled clothing for the rest of the day?

In the Handy Sack from Canadian company Generation Baby is fabulous for poop explosions and more! Carry a spare outfit in the Handy Sack and replace it with the dirty ones whenever necessary – they’ll stay contained until you can get to the closest washer & dryer. It also works to carry snacks, medicines, creams…anything that needs to stay away from the rest of the diaper bag contents. And it’s WAY prettier than a Ziploc bag!

Generation Baby products can be found in retail & online stores throughout North America.

Wheee! I mean “Wee!”

Several months ago, I ordered a couple of mobiles from Wee Gallery to display our son’s pictures. We have gotten more compliments on our photo mobile than on any of our more costly art and recommend them to anyone who asks.

We’ve been reviewing the Wee Gallery art cards for the last month and, though they don’t get as much love from the adults as the cute pictures of our kid, our son and his friends from newborn to three years old have all loved them. The newborns are captured by the stark black and white images and the older toddlers are enthralled with the detail of the images. For adults, the fact that they’re not cartoons means they’re more than tolerable to have hanging or sitting around your house on a semi-permanent basis.

Each set consists of six 5×7 cards which are laminated and rounded for safe & sturdy baby-play. Whether you have the mobile or not (but it’s only $11, so go for it!) the cards will be a popular (and non-plastic, non-battery operated!) addition to your home for less than $13.

Turn the crib into a “wee gallery” for your baby!

We’re giving away a garden set of art cards! To be entered in the random draw, email theopinionatedparent@gmail.com with WEE GALLERY in the subject line and name another art card set that’s available from the Wee Gallery site. Contest closes Friday at midnight MST. Congratulations Ava!

Post Bath Luxury for Little Ones

Bathing a slippery newborn baby can be slightly terrifying, and it’s made worse when you have to wrap them in a towel and hope they don’t kick out of it and freeze while you chase a toddler around the house with pajamas in hand. While I love hooded towels for the toddler set, as soon as you’ve got a big and a little to bathe they’re no longer the perfect post-bath accessory.

What is, you ask?

The gorgeous terry velour bath sacks from Bambini Carini, an upscale company devoted to manufacturing and distributing boutique style baby accessories for the discerning shopper.

Available in 13 exquisite designs including my favourite ‘melrose(pictured at right) the bath sacks are luxuriously soft, hooded for warmth and feature turned cuffs too keep those tiny hands warm. The bathsack retails for $52.00 USD.

Bambini Carini products are available at select retailers. All of their products are available all prints.

Enter to win a luxurious melrose pattern bath sack and matching bib (total value $68 USD) by emailing theopinionatedparent@gmail.com before midnight MST on 5/30/07 with Bambini Carini in the subject line and the correct answer to the question “According to the website, what does Bambini Carini mean?” Congratulations Nicolette!

Keeping Legs Where They Should Be

Our son has been sleeping in a sleep sack since birth. They’re fabulous, and I highly recommend them. But there was a point around 8 or 9 months old when he’d wake up screaming every night with both his legs trapped in one leg of his pajamas and/or his sleep sack so twisted up that he couldn’t move. I won’t put a blanket in his crib with him – not only because it’s risky but he’d never keep it on anyway.

I wish I had found Blankeaze a few months earlier.

The newest product from 2 Virtues, Blankeaze is a wearable fleece blanket made specifically for active sleepers. It’s a wearable blanket with leg holes that is worn over pajamas. It can’t be kicked off, pulled off and, unlike sleep sacks, Blankeaze won’t twist around even the most active sleeper. (And if it would twist, my little mix-master would do it so I assure you – it doesn’t.) It zips up in either the front or the back, depending on your preference, and the bottoms of the legs are elasticized so they stay down really well. Before 6 months I’d still recommend a sleep sack for those middle of the night changes, but the Blankeaze is the way to go once you’ve got a mobile kid that doesn’t need regular changes in the dark hours.

Blankeaze comes in 5 sizes, from 6 months to 3T and is available in pink or blue. They’re available for purchase from the 2 Virtues Store or look for a retailer in your area.

Sweat-Free Summer Swaddling

Most new parents are in the loop about swaddling. For many kids, it’s a necessity. That is – if you like to sleep for more than 20 minutes at a time. I know do.

It’s time to put those oversize flannel receiving blankets away. With summer coming up and new babies being born every minute (or so it seems), those little bundles need to be swaddled in something that doesn’t make them sweat. Like these awesome muslin baby wraps from Aden + Anais. These won’t be news to our Aussie readers, but here in the great white north they’re a novelty that needs to become the standard.

Founded by two Aussie moms who couldn’t find these delightful wraps in the US when they were having their babies, Aden + Anais wraps are a necessity for anyone with a new baby. They’re large enough to swaddle a big 3 month old easily, are lightweight & airy and they get softer with every wash. The material has a natural stretchy quality so it’s super easy to get a tight swaddle. Swaddling challenged? Their site offers some great no-brainer tips.

Aden + Anais wraps have several other uses too; as a breathable nursing cover, sun protection over the stroller, a light blanket, or as a burp cloth. A set of 4 retails for about $44 and is worth every penny.

We’ve got a package of unisex sage wraps for one lucky baby. To be entered in the random draw, email theopinionatedparent@gmail.com with MUSLIN in the subject line and tell us another muslin product available from Aden + Anais. Contest closes on 5/8/07 @ midnight MST. Congratulations Jasmine!

Protect those baby blues. And browns. And greens.

Summer is fast approaching and it’s the time of year when we start to apply sunscreen to our little ones to protect their delicate skin. But what about their eyes? They’re irreplaceable, and they can get sunburned too. In fact, according to the FRUBI SHADES site, “The human eye is ten times more sensitive to harmful UV rays than your skin. The lens of a child allows 70% more UV rays to reach the delicate retina than in an adult. Approximately half of the entire time we spend outdoors in our lifetime occurs in the first twenty years of our life.” Armed with that knowledge, we should all be picking up a pair or three of Frubi Shades!

Designed to fit kids from 6 months to 6 years of age (with a version for older kids coming soon) they’re made of a non-toxic, spongy, form fitting material that’s molded into one comfortable piece. (And I knew they were comfortable when my son actually forgot they were on!) They were originally invented to prevent early eye disease in babies and have grown into much more.

There are soft pads at each temple which add to the comfortable fit and also eliminate the need for the small parts [read:choking hazards] that are on many children’s sunglasses. The special nose piece prevents them from rubbing on the child’s eyelashes – a very important factor in comfort. The specially designed “Ultraguard” lens is non-shattering and extremely protective (from both the sun’s rays and foreign objects!). Frubi Shades are safe for water wear as well, and if they come off, they float. Sounds fun, but they’re not toys. They were designed by an ophthalmologist and are backed by some hard core science.

They’re only $15 for 1 pair or $30 for 3 at the FRUBI online store or at many other retailers (Prices are USD – currently about $17.30 & $34.60 CDN) – a steal of a deal for that much protection!

For eye protection tips, visit the Frubi blog.

Order yours via www.frubishades.com and get $2 off a 3 pack with the code FTOP07 (maximum of 3 packages) until August 31, 2007.

We’ve got a pair of Frubi Shades to give to one lucky TOP reader. To be entered in this random draw, email theopinionatedparent@gmail.com with FRUBI in the subject header and submit the correct answer to the question “Where did the two inventers of Frubi Shades, Dr. Gary Hall and Renee Resler, meet?” Contest closes at midnight MST on 5/8/07. Congratulations Maia!

Mother-Ease

Lots of crunchy, semi-crunchy and wanna-be crunchy parents choose to use cloth diapers. What used to be the norm is now viewed by some as too much work & too much mess. I can tell you definitively that it’s not much work, and if you’ve got too much mess you’re either not doing it right or you’ve got the wrong diapers.

I’ve always been an all-in-one girl (the lazy way to protect the environment) but I’ve been testing out Mother-Ease diapers & covers for the last month. Honestly, I always thought covers would be a huge pain in the you know what, but they’re not.

The Sandy’s diapers have lots of elastic at the legs & back of the waist and they fit like a dream – even on my skinny mini kid. They’re amazingly absorbent. Even after several hours (oops!) the outside of the diaper was not wet. These are my favourite cloth diaper ever. I’ve never had a leak – ever! (And, sadly, my way-too-expensive all in ones from a major brand leaked out the leg holes all the time.)

The Mother-Ease one size diapers really do fit everyone. Strategically placed snaps are manipulated to accommodate your baby’s growing needs, and are reinforced to ensure that they never pull out of the diaper. They’re easy to use, soft & absorbent and the cute covers aren’t a pain at all. They’re super easy to use, fit great and aren’t made of that nasty plastic that the box store covers are. (And they now come in some cool eco-themed prints!)

We’ve got a Mother-Ease Introductory Package to give away, including a one size diaper, an absorbent snap in liner and one air flow cover in the eco-Savanna print. To be entered in the random draw, simply email theopinionatedparent@gmail.com with MOTHER-EASE in the subject line and tell us one of the diapering accessories available from Mother-Ease. Contest closes at midnight MST on 5/5/07. Congratulations Cara!

It’s a Snap(pi)!

by Candice

When I was preparing for the arrival of my first born, I, like every mother, had a lot of decisions to make about how I would care for my bundle of joy. And, like many mothers, I read countless books and did my share of internet searching as well.

I became interested in cloth diapering and decided to give it a try. Parents who have researched this option know that there is a huge variety (and price range) of cloth diapering possibilities. All-in-ones? Pre-folds? Hemp? Cotton?
It became clear early in my search that All-in-Ones, while the Cadillac of cloth diapers, were not in my price range. I resigned myself to the “cheap” old-fashioned nappies called “flat diapers” (think “burp cloth”) with a semi-fancy Velcro cover.

But pins? Could I fasten a cloth diaper onto a squirming newborn using pins? My gut instinct told me “No!”.

Luckily there is an option out there for squeamish vegetarian mothers like myself.

Behold: The SNAPPI Fastener!

The Snappi fastener is a product invented and manufactured in South Africa. It is made of a stretchable non-toxic material. The Snappi Fastener is in the shape of a “T” and has grips on each end. These grips embed in the diaper fabric to create a good fit while still allowing natural movement for the baby.

The Snappi Fastener is affordable (suggested retail price is $2.49), and also economical. I purchased only 3 of them and never had to replace one. Now I’m waiting for my second baby to arrive so I can use them all over again!

The best thing about it is that it cannot hurt the baby in any way (provided, of course, that you use them correctly. They always need to be under a cover.)

Snappi Fasteners are available in 9 colors. The Snappi Company strives to contribute towards the well being of its home community in South Africa, with an ongoing involvement in social upliftment and welfare projects.

Snappi products are available at retailers across North America.

We’ve got 3 Snappi Fasteners for 24 lucky TOP readers! If you’d like to be one of the 24, email theopinionatedparent@gmail.com with SNAPPI in the subject header and tell us one other Snappi brand product. Contest closes at midnight MST on 5/5/07. Congratulations to all 24 of you!

It really is a miracle.

If you’re like me, you see a product with the word ‘miracle’ in the title and you think it’s a scam made just for annoying infomercials. The Miracle Blanket , however, is anything but.

We have been reviewing the Miracle Blanket for a while now. We have two associates with new babies who agreed to help us out with the review. The reason it took so long is that the first reviewer refused to give the sample up to the second reviewer because it worked so well! I gave them each another swaddling blanket that I had when my son was newborn so they’d have a comparison.

The comments on the ‘other blanket’ were 100% negative. “The velcro doesn’t stick.” “The velcro isn’t in the right place so I can’t get it tight enough.” “Baby’s arms are out within minutes.” “It’s pretty, but that’s about it.”

The comments on the Miracle Blanket were, in contrast, 100% positive! It’s very easy to use, there is no velcro to worry about and it’s very wide (6 feet) to allow the tails to wrap multiple times around baby & create a calming pressure on the belly. It has a foot pouch to keep baby’s feet warm & secure, and ingenious arm flaps to keep the little Houdini from escaping. Both of the reviewing mothers mentioned how easy it was to learn to nurse once their babies were swaddled properly, and they also both reported an immediate increase in night time sleep.

Invented by an exhausted father of three, Mike Gatten, the Miracle Blanket really works! (Now I sound like an infomercial, but it’s true!)

The Miracle Blanket is currently 10% off of the regular retail price of $29.95. Twins? Triplets? Just want to make sure you’ve always got one without baby bodily fluids on it? Get 15% off orders of two or more!

Not one to take risks on new products? No problem! The Miracle Blanket has a lifetime guarantee. No fees & no small print. A real guarantee.

The patented Miracle Blanket comes highly recommended by The Opinionated Parents – get it while you’re pregnant and use it immediately. You won’t believe the difference it makes in your baby’s sleep patterns (and, therefore, yours).

We’ve got a gender neutral Miracle Blanket (pictured above) for one lucky TOP reader. To be entered in the random draw, email theopinionatedparent@gmail.com with MIRACLE in the subject line and tell us what non-blanket item is available from the Miracle Blanket order page. Contest closes at midnight MST on 4/30/07.

Please tell me that a nap is in my near future.

Chinese takeout has never been so cute. Fortune Tee has hit both Hollywood and trendy parents everywhere by storm. Launched three years ago by LA based Australian Carla O’Brien, this line of hip tees featuring fortune cookie messages and lucky numbers are full of wisdom & whimsy. The sayings on the shirts are a twist on the proverbs found in fortune cookies.

Fortune maternity tees are a great way to announce your upcoming arrival (A baby boy/A baby girl/Twins are in my near future) or, my personal fave, to make people laugh and perhaps fend off some of the stupid yet inevitable pregnancy comments (Sleepless nights are in my near future).

You’re sure to get a laugh of appreciation when you present the expectant parents with the Kung Pao Combo. Lounge pants and the top of your choice packaged together in a large takeout box – with the requisite fortune cookie of course. Make those old ladies in the grocery store gasp (A surprise will appear in my pants) laugh (A timeout is in my near future) or swoon (Confucius says: Little hearts give big hugs). Whatever your pleasure, a Fortune Tee onesie never goes unnoticed.

For the the family who has everything, they also have some great gift sets. Chances are they probably don’t have these. Also check out the Fortune Tee selection of side orders and tees for non-preggo women and men.

All Fortune Tees are 100% cotton and are served up in a way cool take-out box.

Whether a nap is really in your near future or not, it’s nice to pretend.

Enter to win! We have a Kung Pao Combo (your choice of fortune, size & pant fabric) and a maternity tee (your choice of fortune & size) to give away. Email theopinionatedparent@gmail.com with your choice of Fortune Kung Pao or Fortune Maternity in the subject header and the answer to the question “What your favourite Fortune Tee saying that’s NOT mentioned in this review?” We’ll draw a random winner from all valid entries. Contest closes at midnight MST on 4/24/07. Congratulations Sylvia & Betsy!

My Sweet Ba(m)boo

TOP fave online boutique Baby Dagny has done it again with their newest exclusive product line, super soft Timboo organic bamboo products.

Bamboo is abundant in nature and regrows quickly making it the ideal choice for organic production. It’s also 50% more absorbent than cotton and there are no pesticides or fertilizers used. (Many people are unaware of the plethora of chemicals in non-organic cotton, including carcinogenic formaldehyde.)

Keeping chemicals away from babies is a priority for many parents, but sometimes we compromise luxury in favour of natural. Not so with bamboo. This stuff is amazingly soft, and gets softer with every wash. Available in robes, bibs and washcloths (which you’ll want extra of for yourself – trust me), the Baby Dagny bamboo line is a great investment in your baby’s tender skin, in the environment and in sustainable agriculture.

What’s better? It’s on sale right now! Get 15% off until April 10/07.

Sign up for their newsletter and receive an instant $20 gift certificate toward your order.

Not enough? When you spend a minimum of $75 at Baby Dagny, receive your choice of some great free gifts!

Enough chit chat. Let’s get shopping!

Plastic ducky, you’re the one…

Another awesome Mobi product from Zoom Distribution has entered the ranks of the TOP favourites.

The Digital Duck bath thermometer, available in Canada from Zoom’s retailers, has redeemed the bath thermometer industry once and for all.

You know those annoying temperature strips attached to a variety of goofy plastic things that float in the tub and change colour (kind of) according to the temperature of the water?

Well, do yourself a favour and throw them out. When you do, be sure to get yourself a Digital Duck. This thing rocks. Really.

The web footed base suctions to the edge of the tub unobtrusively. At bath time, just lift the duck from the base and pop him into the water. He’ll power on automatically, quack beep to let you know he’s working, and then within just a few seconds you’ll have an accurate water temperature to 0.1 of a degree. The Digital Duck alarms if the water is too cold or too hot, and the word ‘bath’ flashes above the temperature reading when it’s just right. Move the duck around the tub before baby gets in – it takes only a second to let you know about a dangerous hot spot. Leave it in there and it’ll warn you when the water gets too cold for comfort (if the baby doesn’t do it first!). The floating waterproof design means if doubles as a bath toy.

Temperature strips begone. The Digital Duck bath thermometer from Zoom Distribution is here to stay.

Two lucky TOP readers will win their own Digital Duck bath thermometer courtesy of Zoom Distribution. Email theopinionatedparent[at]gmail[dot]com with Duck in the subject header and tell us…Mobi makes 3 other thermometer products. Name one. Contest closes @ midnight MST on 3/30/07. Congratulations Betty M!

Baby, you light up my life.

TOP favourite Zoom Distribution has done it again.

The MOBI TykeLight Buddy, available in Canada from Zoom’s retailers, is a great little gadget for children’s rooms, from babies to teens.

It’s a funny little man-shaped figure that sits on an electric charger which is completely safe with no exposed contacts. It takes about 6-10 hours to fully charge and automatically turns on and off when removed from and placed back on the charger. (It actually turns off about an inch from the charger with is totally fascinating for a toddler!) The auto-on function also activates during a power outage.

The light is soft and unobtrusive, with low and high settings adjusted with a smooth button on the bottom of the “little guy” (as we’ve taken to calling him around here). When put under the crib overnight, it illuminates the floor and the entire room perfectly for those middle of the night feedings but it’s not so bright as to be annoying or painful to the newly awoken eye. The batteries are supposed to last up to 10 hours, but on low they last well over 14. With both the light and the charger being completely smooth, it’s very easy to clean and there are no grooves to dig random kid-gunk out of. The MOBI TykeLight Buddy isn’t just for nurseries and toddler rooms. Older kids will love the portability of it when exploring their room at night or making their way to the bathroom. It doesn’t look at all “baby-ish” so it can carry a child right through the teen years as an emergency light for power outages (because, of course, they’ll be way too cool for a night light). Heck, I’m thirty (until tomorrow) and I want one for my room!

It’s available in four mod colours – green, orange, blue & yellow (pink and lavender will be available as of April 27) for $29.99 Cdn. Another WAY cool product. This has got me hoping someone’s having a baby soon because it would be a hit at the shower!

Two lucky TOP readers will win their own MOBI TykeLight Buddy courtesy of Zoom Distribution. Email theopinionatedparent[at]gmail[dot]com with Tyke Light in the subject header and the answer to the question What’s another MOBI item that Zoom Distribution carries? before midnight MST on 3/24/07. Congratulations Amelia & Rody!
