Another Way To Make Sure Your Great Grandchildren Still Have an Earth to Inhabit
I recently received some samples of products from Seventh Generation, a Burlington, VT based company that is well known for their full line of non-toxic household products. Where in the past we’d have had to search far & wide to find such products, I can now get them in my local grocery store. (Only one of the ten stores in town, but at least they’re at one!) I have been using several 7th Gen products for a few years and was just as happy with the new (to me) ones I have been using for the past couple of weeks.
I was especially thrilled with the chlorine free diapers and wipes. I’d considered buying them when I fell off the cloth bandwagon but had concerns about their absorbency & comfort. I was pleasantly surprised by our experience with them. While they’re not quite as cushy as a chemical saturated diaper, they work wonderfully and the natural taupe colour is shockingly adorable.
Of all the cleaners I tried, the kitchen cleaner is my favourite. The wild orange & cedar spice scent is so mild it’s barely noticeable and it works great in all areas of the kitchen, including the sticky floors in a pinch. While I try to use Norwex cloths whenever possible, sometimes I am desperate or am cleaning something that I really don’t want on my cloths and I resort to paper towels and I’m digging the recycled & die free rolls from 7th Gen. It’s very green to be brown, you know.
Coupons for 7th Gen products are available here, and be sure to check out their awesome label reading guide (also available as a free iPhone app!)
Win it! We’ve got a bunch of 7th Gen products to give away, all packaged in a reusable shopping bag. To enter, leave a comment on this post before noon mst on July 31, 2009. If you’re so inclined, please share your favourite eco-friendly cleaning products, recipes and tips for all to enjoy!

Excellent giveaway. My fav eco-friendly cleaner? My steam cleaner. Honestly, it cleans so amazingly well without any “cleaner” at all. Just (very) hot water. It does the best on the floors but I’ve also successfully used it on the kitchen counters, cupboards, and fridge. Not so great in the bathroom unfortunately. OH! Also very good at cleaning off marker and paint from toys, and all sorts of gunk from outdoor toys.

Seventh Generation makes the best stuff. I use their dish liquid and their laundry liquid. My best eco-tips are to use nothing but cloth napkins, use old rags for cleaning (no paper towels), and use only cold water for washing your clothes. Alos, don’t buy new stuff. Just use what you have.
July 27th, 2009 at 12:02 pm

Thanks for the giveaway… like many, we use vinegar for a wide variety of basic cleaning chores; our cleaning philosophy is to try vinegar or a vinegar-water solution first !!! Although we have tried Seventh Generation laundry liquid (a great product), we have never tried any of their other household cleaning products as of yet.

I like using organic dish soap for a variety of things. I will clean the kitchen, the bath room, and use it to mop with. Your only using a drop or two, and for certain rooms you only need a bit of water. You can use the left over water to mop if you feel it’s clean enough, or even water your indoor plants.

Seventh Generation products look like a positive step in cleaning. I haven’t tried them yet but I want to do so. I guess my best tip for drain cleaning is plain baking soda followed by white vinegar. After the two interact for a few minutes flush the drain with cold water. Over the years I’ve saved money on plumbers by cleaning my drains this way. Thank you for the contest.

I watched Oprah that day when she was talking about going green, and I printed off the recipes for the cleaners. Luckily, we have a Whole Foods store nearby, so I just handed the woman the recipes and she showed me where everything was

Something I learned at Seventh Generation’s site is that you shouldn’t open your PC’s case to clean or service it, because it will release toxic chemicals into your house. Instead, you should take it out to a professional who knows how to handle it.

I love Seventh Generation — thanks for the chance to win this set of products! As far as green cleaning goes, I’ve discovered the power of vinegar and baking soda for getting most surfaces clean and removing most stains in an eco-friendly fashion. Also, I’ve ditched the artificial (and potentially harmful) air fresheners in favor of natural alternatives, such as boiling fresh-smelling herbs and putting more plants in my home to purify the air safely.

I have liked the Seventh Gen products I have tried so far.
This is a little different but when the girls were little and now for Ian when they first started “helping” I wanted to be sure it was safe for them but they knew plain water for what it was so I mixed in a little baking soda and lemon juice and they felt like they were really helping.
This is so bad but when they came out with one in a pink bottle (I forget the brand) I used to pay almost 3 dollars for it because I was so busy homeschooling and doing my own work.

Vinegar & baking soda will get the smell out of anything, even pet accidents.

Would love to try these products and the diapers would be great as our baby boy is due in 17 days!
One thing I do is I use alcohol to clean stains out of the carpet and use Bon Ami plus natural dishwashing liquid to clean the tubs. Works great!

First I want to say I am dying to try out the Seventh Generation products! They sound absolutely fabulous. But, since we all can’t win, I thought I would share this with everyone:
This is a money saving tip as well as a green tip! Being the “clean freak” that I am I found I was spending so much money per month on home cleaning products. I was discussing this with some friends when one of my very earth friendly savvy friends told me about her recipe for a natural home cleaning product. It is easy to make, safe for the family and contains no toxic ingredients. It is a Creamy Soft Scrubber. You simply pour about 1/2 cup of baking soda into a bowl, and add enough liquid detergent to make a texture like frosting. Scoop the mixture onto a sponge, and wash the surface. This is the perfect recipe for cleaning the bathtub because it rinses easily and doesn’t leave grit. Add 1 teaspoon of vegetable glycerin to the mixture and store in a sealed glass jar, to keep the product moist. Otherwise just make as much as you need at a time. I have been using this for the past 3 months or so and it works fabulously! The cost to make this is less than $1 so if you are like me, and are constantly cleaning this will save you $$$ every month! Perhaps someone here will find this tip useful, I hope so!
