The Adventures of Scuba Jack
The Adventures of Scuba Jack is a new, interactive DVD series for preschool aged children that combines education and entertainment through the use of animation, puppets and live actors. The concept was created by Beth Costanzo, the owner of two preschools, and the DVD’s actually simulate a day at pre-school. They engage young children through stories & activities, and in addition to their main topic of instruction (Tide Pools, in the first episode) also improves their letter and word recognition, basic arithmetic, classification, fine motor and gross motor skills.
The cast of characters, including Ms. Beth – the Pre-School Teacher, Scuba Jack – the knowledgeable underwater adventurer who visits the classroom to take the students on ocean adventures, Paco the Pelican – a talking pelican who teaches the children a new Spanish word each day and many more quirky folks, are not professional actors or professionally filmed by any stretch of the imagination. While that got on my nerves ever so slightly, my kids and their preschool aged friends who spend their days here have asked to watch Scuba Jack at least twice a day, every day, since the DVD showed up a week ago. They’ve learned some very interesting ocean facts and it’s even brought out some more realistic imaginative play with their sea creature toys. While shopping recently, my son blurted out something or other about tide pools and told me that he likes “all sorts of adventures” and “gathering on the rocks.” This stuff sticks.
The DVD ($20 in the Scuba Jack shop, along with a ton of other cool stuff) comes with “Under the A-B-Seas,” an awesome colouring book (& crayons!) that features an ocean creature for each letter of the alphabet. They’re line-drawn (read: easy to copy for the kids to use more than once) and each is accompanied by an interlined label for the creature in a dotted font for the child to trace. It’s an awesome colouring book and would be a great addition to an ocean theme in a preschool/kindergarten classroom or homeschooling home.
So, while I don’t really want to watch this show every day anymore, I’m thrilled to use it and especially the colouring book in my classroom and in my home.
Parents and caregivers can download episode specific learning activities from the Scuba Jack website that create a unique, interactive pre-school experience for their youngster.
Win it! We’ve got a DVD/colouring book pack to give away. To enter, leave a comment on this post before noon mst on May 20, 2009.
