Where better to begin ‘green’ education than your own back yard?

When I was a kid, I was lucky enough to spend my days making mud pies, running & crawling through prairie fields & avoiding worms while jumping in puddles. In a sad turn of events, many of today’s children not only suffer from nature deprivation but they now, more than ever, need to start their environmental education early in order to save our strained Mother Earth.

Luckily, new company The Little Environmentalists has just released the first in their series of children’s books addressing just that. Nature Discovery In My Back Yard is geared for preschoolers & early readers. It follows a little girl as she explores her back yard and discovers what is out there to see when she just takes a little time.

The book sells for just $6.95 and is available from The Little Environmentalist. You can also print this sheet to go along with it.

Win it! We’ve got a copy of Nature Discovery In My Back Yard to give away. To enter, leave a comment on this post before 5 pm mst on October 27, 2008.

We have a huge backyard that backs up onto some wetlands, with conservation land not far off — so it is not unusual at all to have deer, or turkey, or foxes, or armadillos, or hawks, or owls, or the occasional bear (USUALLY only after dark) — and the squirrels and lizards and tree frogs are seemingly infinite.

BTW — anyone seriously interested in the book SHOULD definitely download the nds.pdf file behind the “this sheet” link waay up top, there… makes an excellent ‘worksheet’ for explorers!

  96. # 96 Mollie G. Says:
    October 27th, 2008 at 2:34 am

Everything we do to inculcate and encourage a sense of ecological responsibility in our children will be effort well spent. The more they know and appreciate, the stronger the web of life we all weave and share.

  97. # 97 Tricia Andrews Says:
    October 27th, 2008 at 6:02 am

We just saw a deer in our neighbor’s backyard last week. There is a huge eco-world in our backyard and I think this book would help me introduce my 4 year old to it (and I could learn something as well!)

Brings back wonderful memories of when I was little. My mother read me a book every night, even if they had company. I obviously knew my books by heart, because later on, she told me that i used to say sometimes “Mommy, you skipped a page!” Too bad there’s not enough reading going on now – plus this looks like an adorable book!
